I think you should call around to local paint shops and see how much they would charge to straighten any body dents and rough up the paint and put another coat of black on, then a clearcoat. If I may, I would suggest House of Kolor black pearl paint and a clear coat. Depending on labor it should cost under a grand and I am pretty sure you will like the color. I just sanded mine to bare substrate and primed and painted it in January. Cost me a little over 900 for supplies and labor is always free. It helps to have a place to paint in though. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I would suggest waiting to fix your car until the problem is resolved.

what kind of body shops are you guys dealing with? $1000 for a paint job with little sanding, no color change what gives? I just had 89 Bronco2 [restoration project] painted this past summer, sand and strip top and hood, get rid of white paint entire truck solid metallic dark blue with 3 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear coat for $350. must be a lot higher in new england and the west coast for body work. no wonder car lots around here are full of used cars from up north.

$350 bucks won't even buy you decent blue paint oh_my

I just had my 91+ repainted black...it had NO dents only two door dings. They didn't repaint door jams, but everything else...cost me 3,300. It was $900 bucks in paint and supplies.

I repainted my 89 myself cost me roughly $800 bucks. Granted Labor was free...and it didn't turn out bad for spraying it in a glorified garage. :D ....I could squeeze blood out of my fingertips though  :( headbang

I checked all the touch-up paints for Plasti_Kote and their guide (which is used to cross-reference the car manufacturers' paint code with Plasti-Kote's) stated that all their touch up paints are acrylic lacquer based.

The touch up paint you purchase from a Ford dealer which has the same code as the color code for your car is also acrylic lacquer - says it on the bottle.

My black '89 does not have a clearcoat. The poster who stated that only the titanium color came with a clear coat is correct.

Lacquer is most likely used for most touchup paints since it dries so quickly compared to enamel.

But thanks for all the suggestions.

I'll take a look at the House of Color Pearl Black.

If you watch "Monster Garage" on Discovery they use House of Color paints almost exclusively and they used the Pearl Black for a flame-throwing hurst they built with retractable robot arms used to flip another car and smash it.

They have some pretty outrageous projects on Monster Garage.

If you want a good laugh and see bunch of guys with wild creativity go wild with torches and wrenches, give it a try.

in reply to the question about paint prices; if you are repainting to original shape, there are tons of different paint suppliers that will sell you and your body shop at a reasonable price [<&350] if you want to upgrade, how deep are your pockets?

Not very deep. I am suffering through unemployment right now. But I would use the insurance money that they estimate that it would take to repaint the car.

Where should I have the estimate done? If I go anywhere but the Ford dealer it would be higher and they may not approve that.

Should I have it painted at the Ford dealer?

Or maybe the highest estimate will be from the Ford dealer and I can get a better paint job somewhere else for the same money!!

Marcus,

You have obviously managed to irritate someone. The extent of the damage to your car, that is the dollar value, should quallify for felony charges against the perpetraiters.

Did you file a police report? If you have not, then do so ASAP.

As for you and your family getting revenge, this is a bad idea. There is an old saying in the marshal arts, "when you go for revenge dig two graves"! Let the law handle the matter.

As for the paint. Go for a base coat-clear coat system, or a urethane. The new stuff far out- shines the old enamels and lacquers. rangerj

I filed four (4) police reports. One for each incident. It was only the last incident, where permanent damage was caused to the car, that matters regarding the law.

Did you know that someone can smear dog crap on your car and that person has committed no crime that is punishable by law since no permanent damage was done to the vehicle?

The police are doing and will do nothing. From the information I gave them, there is nothing they can do regarding following up.

I don't believe in revenge.

I do believe in fairness and justice, neither of which will be served until the perpetrator is caught.

That is my only goal, that the person be brought to justice and for him to realize that he has no right to commit a criminal act when someone else is exercising his/her right to free speech.

I am willing to accept any criminal consequences that occur to me while trying to serve justice to him.

Thanks for the advice on the paint systems. I think the best recommendations point to the modern two coat (BC/CC) system.

Now I just have to find a place to have it done.

since I am a scorpio, I believe revenge is a good deterrent, just as our society does, but calls it punishment.
Anyway, if I was to paint a SHO that I valued, and used black, I would get DuPont Imron black over black epoxy primer, then at least 2 coats of clear. Whatever anyone says, no other paint really is up to Imron for strength, resistance to fading, resistance to chemicals, ozone, chipping, etc., just do the research so evaluate and see what I mean. You will get a super lasting high gloss. If you use pure black color, you will get great depth. Additives like pearl or metallics generally dont provide depth in black and make matching color for repairs more difficult. But it you like their effect, it may be worth it.

A note of caution,

DuPont Imron is everything Dave says it is, but it is NOT a do-it-yourself friendly product. It should only be used by someone trained in its use, and someone who has the proper facilities, AND someone who has the proper safety equiptment.

You must wear a full body suit with a repirator and a separate supply of air to breath.

I doubt that any paint supply shop would sell the product to a do-it-yourselfer, but you never know!

This is one product that should be left to the professionals to apply. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.

I have heard that the Imron is superb. I've started to do some background reading on automtive paints for interest. My background is chemical engineering with emphasis on surface science and coatings but I've spent my entire career in the petroleum and refining industry so it will take me awhile to come up to speed.

The only competition to the superiority of the U.S. chemical industry and products would be from Germany. Glasurit is the company and name of the paint that is used exclusively on BMW's, Mercedes, etc.

But its availability is only through licensed dealers that work with those manufacturers. It is not a practical option to pursue as for my level of economics, the American brands are just as good or better.

I have to read up on Imron, but I would think that the hazard concerns are due to isocyanate which is REALLY nasty and a suspected carcinogen (maybe confirmed carcinogen at this point).

I've worked with zinc chromate primers for aluminum and now they are a no-no. Now they tell me! Hexavalent chrome in the product is the nasty. Manufacturers (and the main users - the airline industry) are switching to zinc oxide because it is less toxic. But the diehards will always give you the "but its not as good as the chromate verson" response".

Much thanks to all, I'm learning more every day and it beats the original thoughts of the "dealer" paint job at Ford or the $500 one-day deal my neighbor had done on his Fiero and keeps trying to convince me that this is more than adequate and I'd be nuts to spend any money in a custom shop.

Thanks for the tip on pearl versus straight black. I'm much more interested in high gloss black. I looked at the House of Color Pearl Black and it didn't exactly excite me, but the again I was looking at a sample.

Sorry your car is getting vandalized.

Time to do some soul searching and decide if you bumper sticker is worth the $2000 it's going to take to re-paint it.

Rest assured, even if it gets painted and you remove the stickers, I suspect your car will still be a target.

I can't advise you to move, but some all-night/day surveilance may be in your interests.

If indeed you find the individual...go straight to the police and get your car painted for free.

Steevil,

I could not disagree more. Marcuss should not run and hide from some puke that does not have the guts to confront him face to face, but rather the punk plays sophmoric pranks.

I know of no other nations that value the right to speak freely, especially on political matters, more than the U. S. and Canadians.

I do not advocate vigillanti justice, but if the punk gets his head bashed in (or knee capped)he will have gotten what he deserves. Justice!

Marcus, no surender, no retreat, and never say die! It has become a matter of principle. rangerj

I know this guy who ... ah never mind!

"It is better to die standing on your feet than to live on your knees."

I have no intention of not doing anything.

All I want is for justice and fairness to be served.

The individual committed a criminal act and he should be brought to justice so he may learn that he has no right to break the law and not face the consequences.

I have no intention of getting myself or anyone else hurt. I just want to apprehend him.
