A while back I was scratching my head over what to do about our exhaust system, which is original and in good shape, except for the mufflers. The Dynomax system is no longer available, so that was out. I decided to go the cheap SOB route and replace just the mufflers for now. The stock mufflers have an 18" body with offset outlets. The best fit replacement I could find has a 14" body. I wasn't sure that would work, but it did. I met my objectives of using the stock hangers and retaining the stock turn-down look, while getting rid of those tiny 1-3/4" factory spouts.

These are inexpensive Thrush 17712 mufflers. The sound is a little deeper than stock; some rasp at high RPM mainly in 1st gear when the engine is lightly loaded; other than that, awesome sound and they don't beat your eardrums on the highway. The spouts are off the shelf Walker 41420.
Right side: I cut the hanger rod off of the original spout and welded it onto the new one.
Left side: These mufflers have the correct body girth to allow the original band clamp and hanger to be reused. If you need a new one, it's Dynomax 35511.

Don't cut the original mufflers off at the weld! Cut them off right at the inlet ******, leaving all of the remains of the original inlet on the tailpipe. Grind down the weld, and you end up with the perfect size "bushing" to fit the 2" inlet on the new mufflers.

This turned out nicer than I expected for not much money. Imagine my surprise when I found out that what I thought was a rattling baffle on the right side muffler was actually the tailpipe full of catalytic converter debris; some the size of a golf ball. Pain in the butt to get out, but we prevailed. Now I'm wondering if it was from a meltdown in the factory Y pipe, or the Magnaflow that replaced it. I ran out of time to investigate that before the SHO left with my son for St. Louis. I'm guessing the meltdown happened during one of our many road trips because all of the material blew back into the far tailpipe, and as best I can tell none was (thankfully) sucked back into the motor.
