ive purchased my very first car 2 days ago. it happened to be a 92 5spd sho w/ 112000 miles. 1800 bux. seemed like a very good deal to me given how good of condition it was in, also has all factory options. but anyway, truely amazing car. wicked fast, although its my first car so i just learned to drive stick on it, but im already decent. seems like everything is perfect on it except for it just started an idle problem. and this started the day after a night of pushing the car to its limits. but heres what happens:
start car fine, idles right at 1k.
touch the throttle at all, it revs up fine, but when you let go, it only goes back down to somewhere between 2k-3k. i tried pulling the pedal back up, but it doesnt do anythign. so i pop the hood, and find the springy part that the throttle cable is connected to, i can see a little gap, just poke it back w/ my finger and its fine again. until you rev it up at all again. same deal. so the throttle is sticking open from something. i tried to use some wd40 on it, didnt do anything. the cars still drivable, but its kinda weird sittin at a redlight w/ your engine racing like that. and shifts are kinda rough since u cant drop the engine below 3 usually. but once your driving its fine and hauls ***. thanks alot for anyone who took the time to read all my rambling and can help me out. cant wait to get this beast running good. other than that, and a little reverse grinding, this thing is amazing. o yea, and the damn blown out sub...

Sounds like you already found the cause of the problem. You're gonna have to figure out why the gap is being left.

You need to replace the key lock cylinder. If you do a search you will come up with several threads on the issue. Not that difficult a job.

It may be as simple as some carbon build up inside the throttle body. Take off the intake hose ( rubber air hose going to motor ) and open the throttle plate ( press the gas to the floor, or hold open with you hand on the throttle linkage at the throttle body ) and see if that brass colored circle could be hitting some black grime in there... Note: Make sure you car is off.

Clean out the grime with some intake cleaner. Make sure it is intake/throttle body cleaner. Not carb cleaner.

It may be as simple as that. You also may have a bad throttle body, or sticking throttle cable.

Lastly, I can tell by your verbage that you are new to working on cars. I recommend that you search all kinds of different things in this site. It is a very useful resource. Good keywords are things like 60k service, timing belt replacement, tune up specs, rod bearings, etc... Get to know the car and treat her right. She will return the favor...

Good luck, and welcome

Mike

Also, if you go to first gear before you engage reverse. It will not grind. :thumb:

thanks, i played w/ it some more, i removed the cruise control wire from the throttle body. then it worked fine, or at least i thought. i backed out of the driveway, but once i got to the street it stalled out. i restarted numerous times and it wouldnt start, eventually it does start if you give it bit of gas, then it idles at 1k. but sometimes still stalls just sitting in neutral at a red light. so for now i just put the cruise thing back on and am dealing w/ the high rev.

Sounds like the nostrils in the EGR area are clogged. you will need to remove the TB in order to see the little "snake nostril" like openings behind it. Run a coat hanger through them to clean them out after spraying some Berrymans in there. Also, check all your intake vacuum lines for disconnects or cracks. Checking both of those things should solve your problems. Good luck.
