OK, a few weeks ago his car started acting up and wouldn't idle, then it went completely dead.
We changed the plugs, filters, oil, fluids, etc. and the car decided to run again. Now two weeks later it is back to not wanting to idle and I am a little stumped.

Plug wires, what cond. are they in? That could be the issue.

EDIT: Looking at that post again, it looks like oil might be getting into the plug wells (doesn't work after only 2 weeks on new plugs). That will give ignition problems.

Check the IAC, it could be plugged up. There is an article on shotimes on how to do this, I believe it involves a 5mm allen key socket, some long extensions, and Berryman's B12 Chemtool.

Plug wires are about a year old, we also replaced the oil seals in the plug wells at the same time so they are clean.

I'll have to look at the IAC, anyone care to save me a little time and post a link?

My 91 was dead on purchase - we went through EVERYTHING ignition & fuel, then I checked the Y-Pipe & it was clogged solid. Symptoms sound the same as my previous owner's.

Otherwise, IAC.

Good Luck Mark.

hmm, We did that when we changed the plugs & wires last summer and my bro has only put 5,000 miles on it since we did all this (July 2000). you think it could have gotten gummed up within 5,000 miles?

i had the same problem about 3 weeks ago. The car would drive fine, but when I was at an idle, the car would bog down and soon die. I changed my O2 sensors and it fixed the problem.

to remove the iac unplug it, remove the bolt, then push it down and unscrew the top
for better clearance then remove the bottom bolt and clean the old on or buy a new one for about $100 and put it on.bolt back same way. I replaced mine in about ten minutes. Very Important Don't Lose the Gasket.

The IAC is clean, and after reading the symptoms of the IAC (or IAB... whatever) I highly doubt thats it because the car doesn't surge at all.

The only time the car won't stay running is when its cold or wet. As soon as there is some temp in the engine the car seems to run ok. I drove it for a couple hours straight lastnight with no problems, this morning the car won't stay running until some heat is built up. (a total of 4 restarts in the driveway later)

Hmmmmmm......maybe the ECT sensor is bad. It could be telling the computer the engine is warm, when in fact it is cold. Sensor screws into thermostat housing and costs maybe 15-20.

Well we pulled the codes and the only running code is for the IAB, I pulled it apart earlier today and it is pretty clean so we are just going to replace it and see if that takes care of the problem.
If it doesn't then I am back to square one.
