I just got a call from a friend who has a line on some 5 speed SHO parts, and I want to convert mine. Let me start by saying that I do have the PDF explaining the process, but I'm not 100% sure on why the 3.2 is mounted in a different location than the 3.0. The only thing I can come up with is that the distance from the input shaft to the axle shafts is different from auto to manual. Is this correct?

Why do people swap out the subframe? I've got decent welding and fabrication skills. Would it be easy to modify the mounts and stick with the ATX sub frame?

No possibility of using 3.2 accessories?

I know that these are usually the types of questions that if you have to ask the project is out of reach, but the only reason I'm asking is because I haven't had a chance to make a close up comparison of parts and engine bays.

Everything is set back an inch and change... The MTX subframe only mounts with the MTX accossories, only with the MTX timing componants... You can make your ATX stuff work, but it does all need to set bakc the same distance because of axle shaft lengh and angle from the MTX trans

Much of this has been previously discussed in the threads that reference the pdf.

Yes, the 3.2 is relocated to accomodate the different dimensions of the ATX transmission.

Using the MTX subframe provides the proper transmission mount and motor mounts in the proper locations for use with the MTX transmission. One could certainly hack up an ATX subframe to achieve the same thing, but one could also save all that unnecessary effort and just use an MTX subframe.

You can use the ATX accessories in this conversion (I did), but it requires some fab work either for the accessory brackets (which I did) or for the motor mounts (which others have done). Or, you can just swap the accessories and brackets from an MTX and avoid the fabrication issues.

You can do it however you want. The least painful way is to use the 3.0 accessories and the mtx subframe. However, if you want the 3.2 accessories, you can make that work, its just more difficult because then its not just a bolt-together swap - its a 'fab a bunch of stuff up to make it work' swap.

I think if I do another one, I will keep the 3.2 accessories. I only have so much patience for that stupid adjuster on the 3.0 power steering belt.... However, I am helping a guy put a 3.2 in his mtx now, and we are using the 3.0 accessories because that way we just get to bolt it all together - no welding, no measuring, cutting, measuring again, cutting again, etc. etc.

If you want to keep the 3.2 accessories you will need to fab your engine mounts.

I used a mustang conv 79 for the rear

And a cut/welded mtx front mount.

How did you reconnect the bracket halves? Pics would be good if you have them.
