Need new tires

Sorry gang, but the archives have some conflicting opinions about specific models in this topic, so I'll try to not to bore the heck outa everyone, but here's the deal. Obviously, I need tires to fit my slicers.

The car has Firestone FT70c on it, but they are now desperately needing retirement. Pardon the pun. wink

Anywho, last winter, we saw almost zero snow here in NJ. The winter before we had so much that even my 4x4 Jeep would choke on it.

The question being, If you needed a good all season tire, with a good treadwear rating and at a modest; read under $100 per tire, what would it be?

THe Sumitomo HRT+'s are great tires. I don't have them but i have heard a lot of good things about them. for 225/50/ZR16 the price is i think $87. They are great tires. These i would recommend and i think am getting some soon

Maybe I should rephrase the question.....

Tire rack shows many great tires in my sub-$100 price catagory. There are so many, I don't know where to start. I can read specs as well as anyone else. But when there are so many models with such close specs, it gets a bit much.

What I'm asking for are some personal opinions...

"hey I have brand xyz and it's great" or
"hey brand xyz sucks, avoid it."

I have FT70c's on the car but they were so worn when I got the car last fall, a fair opinion on them is not possible.

You know you're gonna laugh at me and no one ever listens to me but the tires at Pep Boys which are made by Cooper I believe are really very good all season performers. In my experience they do a damn good job in bad weather such as snow or rain than in dry pavement. They have 4 or 5 deep lines/grooves for treading water and their treadwear is like 300-500 I can't remember depending on what you get. I have Futura 2000's 215/65R15's and my friend has Something similar with more tread life on his SC'd 97 Riviera. Just lettin you know. Oh and they're quiet.

I've been running the dunlop 5000's for a year and I'm happy with them. They did fine by me last winter up here, time will tell how the fare this year with less tread. Good luck.

I have a set of kumho's on my SHO. I don't know how they will do in the snow yet. But they are cheep, quiet, and have like a 40-45,000 mile life.

Great post. My 91 Plus needs tires now too!
I have Michelin XGT4's on it. I notice 2 main things, grip and wear. The XGT4's dry grip was just OK. Lot of tire chirp, not as much grip as the GT+4 that were stock. But they lasted a lot longer (I think I got 9K off of the OEM fronts)! More of touring tire than a hi-po tire.

Those Kumho's (Ecsta HP4 716??) are only $46!! And well-liked (per Tire Rack).
Did you have problems find them or the Sumitomo's locally or did you mail order them?
The Dunlops look like a good option too.

Hey Kurt, I haven't bought anything yet. I'm leaning towards the $46 Kumho, only because at that price I won't be too upset if they get roasted.

I have Z-rated 225/55/16 Yokohama AVS Sports on my slicers and there great in the dry/rain but no winter tire.

I'd recommend Pirelli P7000SS(dont know if there under $100), I have them in 235/40/18 on the my 18" TD rims and used them for the last 2winters with decent control in the snow, yes they are 18" all-season tires .

RISHO is right, I had those tires on my 17's for a while. Excellent wet traction, but pricey. I now have Falken Ziex ZE-502's on my slicers in a 225/50/VR16. They handle pretty damn close to the Pirelli's in the rain. My Pirelli's never saw the snow, but the Falkens were suprisingly good. And they only cost $68 a piece through Discount Tire Direct. Just don't expect a huge amount of grip on dry pavement. Although they do leave very nice black strips when you need to. burn_out

Well, the Dunlops locally were about $150 each out the door and not in stock.
The Kumho's were $50 out the door and in stock. Umm, think that issue is solved.

What's the feeling on tire size? I've always run the 215/60/16's, mainly cause the wheel isn't very wide. 225/55's still handle OK and ride OK? Seems like most people here are running them. With the baby, this is mainly a fun driver car now.

They'll fit just fine, here are my 225/55/16 Yokohama AVS Sports on the slicers:




Others even go with 225/50/16 for a stiffer wall which is pushing it but will fit.

I have the Yokohama AVSdb 225-60-16, am extremely satisfied under all conditions and speeds.
VERY quiet (hence the "db" designation), wont hydroplane, super cornering, very good wear too. Look great too, tread pattern is cool. I paid $106.00 each, had them siped too, at Discount tire. Worth more!
Get the 225 as the 215 has one less layer, and the 225 look great and work with the speedometer OK
