Hi,

There is pulley that is 3 1/2 inches in diameter towards the bottom of the engine on my 89 SHO. Anyway, the nut that was holding it on came loose and the pulley fell off. The pulley was retrieved and is in good shape, but the nut is gone.

Does anyone know what this pulley spins, and where can I get a nut to put it back on?? Does it have to be a specific nut, or can I put on anything that fits?

Any input is appreciated,

Phil

Phil,

Sounds like one of the tensioner pullies. Did a belt also come off? There is a six ribbed belt, and a four ribbed belt that drive the waterpump, A/c compressor, power steering pump, and alternator.

The nut is not SHO specific, but the replacement has to be the same size and thread pitch. Consider using a lock nut. There is a thrust washer that goes on before the nut that you will need. Check with the forum to see if someone has one to sell. rangerj

I believe it's a 10mm nut. I lost one before also, and advance auto had the nuts on the shelf. M10x1.5 I think, or 1.25. Either way, I remember it took a 17mm wrench

Can you be a little more specific? If it is in the lower FRONT, that would be on your A/C compressor. Towards the back, but not on the bottom, is your P/S.

Thanks so much for the replies...you guys kick ass!

To try to be more specific: The belt is loose, but is still there....and it is the 4 rib belt. And the pulley is on the bottom of the motor closer to the firewall as opposed to the front of the car.

Phil,

That is the idler pulley for the power steering belt. The other pulley, toward the front of the car, is mounted in the same way as the back one.

You need a nut and a washer to match the front one. The nut will be no problem, it should be available at any hardware or auto parts store. The washer is SHO specific, and may be available through a Ford dealer's parts department.

This is unlikely as these type parts have long since been discontinued. The best source is going to be a forum member who is willing to sell an extra one. As best I know, this washer is shaped to fit the pulley/bearing and is necessary. A common washer will not do!

SHOZ123, your input here would be greatly appreciated. Can a common washer be substituted?

Ask Hubes what he used.

I sent him a spacer, but couldn't find the washer until a few days after I shipped the spacer.

From what I see, you can make do nicely with a couple of carefully selected fender washers.

You can user the Gen 3 idler pulleys (not tensioner) with the Gen 3 washer.

Super Phil,

There are three generations of SHO. The first generation has the Yamaha 3.0L v-6 89 thru 92.

The second generation has the 3.2L v-6 93 thru 95.

The third generation has a v-8 96 thru 99.

I may be off on the cut off years, so someone please correct me. Anyway, you get the idea. The gen 3 SHOs are the latest model years. rangerj

Sorry Super Phil, did not get the email notification of the PM. Get the '99 idler pulley and washer. Make sure it is not the tension pulley. Last time I checked they were up to ~$50.00.
