Hey guys,

Heres the story-

The cars a 95 MTX, its got 146,000km's so around 90K miles. It has not been driven a lot AT ALL since 2003 by the previous owner. It spent a lot of times just sitting in the garage all winter and then a lot of the times in the summer too.

Me and my father took the intake manifold off, changed the cam sensor and a few gaskets on the intake and what not and fired it up today. The car ran awsome, nice and smooth idle and *and then when it heated up, it made a ticking like noise, it was quite loud and its in the same interval as the injectors. But heres another thing. The sound is not consistant. It comes and goes. It will tick tick tick tick and then stop....then a few seconds later, here it comes again. It sound like the injectors but wouldnt the injectors ALWAYS tick? I have heard injector ticks before on SHO's but they are constant, unlike this one.

Any suggestions guys??

THANKS!

I say this post needs to be moved to the proper section.

However, sounds like maybe a worn out cam chain tensioner or worse...infamous rod bearings. Are you able to isolate the sound at all?

It is definatelly coming from the top of the motor, but i cannot specify any further. Once again for other folks- it comes and goes. The ticking starts out quiet, then louder and louder, then quiter, quieter till its done, then it just keeps doing that.

If it was rod bearings, wouldnt they sound constant instead of tick and then stop?

Pull your timing covers, and look for red dust around the crank sprocket.

I had those same symptoms, and it ended up being crank cancer for me. I'm in the final stages of it, where you have no more torque, your gas mileage sucks, and the noise begins to become more and more continuous. Only fix for it is to replace the crank or the motor. I chose the latter of the two. :frown:

Before we condem the motor you need to isolate the noise. Get a mechanics stethascope and find where the noise is from.

A long screwdriver will also work, just not as good.

Today i unplugged the lil black plug from the back of the intake that controlls the airflow to the secondaries. I was told this could also be it. But none the less, the noise was still present. Any more suggestions?

Narrow down where the noise is coming from. That'll help us to help you a lot better.
