Ok I know you should search before posting but after reading almost all of the posts haveing to do with "crank bolts" I only found out two things!
#1- I learned the signs of a rod bearing going out (wish I would have knew that before mine blew)
#2- I learned every way possible to remove the crank bolt if the motor is in the car!

Ok now for my problem... I need to get the crank bolt off, but the motor is out of the car and on an engine stand (so I can't put a flex plate on the other side to hold the crank). I need to get the bolt and the pully off so I can replace the timing belt and crank sensor and water pump before I put this motor into my car! My search didn't bring up anything about removeing a crank bolt on a motor that is out of the car so if anyone can help please do!

a) A VERY powerful impact gun.

b) bolting the engine down to something so it won't lift when you torque it. Bolt a long bar on the back end of the crankshaft. breaker bar on the crank bolt the opposite way. That MIGHT work.

c) after trying both of those on one of mine, it was finally drilled out & a replacement crank bolt was used.

Good luck.

If you can't put a flywheel or flexplate on the engine while on the stand, then I would suggest you put 2 bolts into the crank and use a crow bar or other bar wedged against the engine stand and then go to town on the crank bolt with either an impact gun or a long lever arm.

I tried this about ten minutes ago with a big rachet (my impact is at work). All that happened was I broke the rachet (that was pretty cool) and it bent the **** out of one of the bolts I put in the end of the crank! The bolt didn't even try to move!!!

By this, I'd assume that you're talking about my list of failed attempts. I'll try to get a picture of the jig that my friend made. It's a stiff, flat metal piece, with 3 holes near one end. (the piece is long enough to get decent torque on) 2 little holes line up with the holes in the crank pulley, and between those, there is a hole large enough to get a 19mm socket into. Bolt the jig onto the pulley, and use a breaker bar to move the bolt. Make sure you are going in the right direction. :D

Try a large strap wrench on the crankshaft damper to resist the torque of a large wrench.

Dustin,

You could use a short length of chain bolted to the harmonic balancer and a nearby engine bolt. Make sure the chain is bolted to a steel part and not aluminum, and that the chain does not go across anything plastic or that is crushable. The chain must also be close to the anchoring point, not high up on the shaft of the bolt or otherwise it will bend the bolt.

Once the crank is imobilized, pre-tighten up the chain and put your chosen method of un-twist on the crank bolt and go to town. I'n not a big fan of pneumatic impact wrenches so I use a short breaker bar with a small hammer (one pound head). With the chain and breaker bar pre-loaded, the crank bolt receives the full force of the hammer blow and it usually only takes two or three hits with the hammer. Make sure you use a 6 point socket, preferably a case hardened one, and that the breaker bar is at a right angle to the socket, otherwise some of the force will be used up in trying to knock the socket off the bolt, instead of just twisting the bolt.

I currently have the same problem. I hit it with 90# from an impact and nothing. I'll be trying again with some heat in 2 weeks I can imagine (hope) I will have better results.

My concensus: Use heat!

I have found that Air tools(impacts) are over-rated. Yes it is very nice to pull a button and have a bolt come out rather than turn a rachet a bunch of times, but most bolts on my car the impact could not break. I ended up using brute strength :D to break them loose.

I have taken the crank bolt off once while the engine was on a stand. I used a "poor man's" impact device. (a what???) Get a 3/4" or 19mm offset box wrench. Make sure the wrench fits fully on the bolt head and the handle is not jammed against the harmonic balancer. Then get a 2 ft (approx) length of wood and wail on that wrench. Don't laugh, it only took 3 wacks. You need some safety precautions,,tie a piece of rope on the wrench to limit its flight. Pre-tension the wrench with a bungie cord or something. The trick is maximum velocity, not brute force. You will not be able to hit it hard enought to tip the engine over, and it's cheap. About that rope, use a real short one. I don't recommend trying this with a socket and breaker bar. The bar will absorb all the energy and nothing will happen. Keep us posted!!

I was going to try my impact but I was thinking it would just spin the crank. BTW- I haven't come across a bolt yet that my impact won't break. I'm just worried about screwing up the crank! but I will try some of the ideas here.

Thanks guys

A real impact will not spin the crank much, just like the tires don't turn much when using one.

well, if there is a bolt that your impact would fail to budge, it could very well be this one :)

All you need is the right impact and that bolt will fly out of there. We got this 1.5" drive impact at work I bet that will take that out right quick. But of course your going to need a 1 1/4" Air hose and two people to run it.

Well the damn thing is off... I didn't want to use the impact unless I had to so I tried everything else first. Nothing worked, so I used vice-grips clamped to one of the bolts for the flywheel to keep the crank from spining, and went at it with the impact. I love my impact!!! That impact made it look easy I wish I would have just started off with the impact. Now I need to get the pully off?

Harmonic balancer puller. AutoZone will lend you one for free, you just have to leave a $15 deposit.
