I'd like to start a thread on V6 MTX SHO clutches. Last year I purchased my first SHO. A 1993 MTX with 92,000 on the original clutch!! I purchased this vehicle from an older lady in my home town. She had no clue what she had and sold it to me for only $3,500!! Anyway, here is the real discussion.

When I purchased this vehicle it came with all service records and the lady stated that it was never in the shop for a clutch. The clutch was in working condition but the throwout bearing was on its last leg. She said that the dealership told her that it was time for a new clutch but she decided that she would rather sell the car and buy a new vehicle. She did own this SHO for about 10 years.

After I bought the car, the following week I started tearing it down to install a new clutch. I looked around S.S. and heard about their High Revs. Jr. Clutch for about $600. I decided to keep looking around before digging in that deep to the pocket book. I ended up at my local Advance Auto Parts store because I have a card that is good for 10% off all purchases. The clutch was made by the company "Zoom". The price was about $250 give or take $25 or so. It has been about 1 yr. & 6 months since I purchased it. The clutch came with a 1 year warrantee.

I had the stock flywheel machined at a reputable local machine shop before I installed the new clutch. It came with a sleeved throw-out bearing but from what I’ve since heard, it did not have a sleeve that covered the quill on the input shaft of the tranny. At the time, I did not know that there was some clutches that came with this sleeve to protect the quill from further wear. After I put the car back together, I took it out for a test drive. The clutch felt much better but I was very disappointed at how far up the clutch pedal was before the clutch started to engage. The auto tensioner was properly working and I also installed a brand new clutch cable. I’ve lived with the way this clutch is for a little over a year now. Recently the clutch is only grabbing at the very end of the pedal. The clutch pedal is starting to get gritty feeling so I know that the throw-out bearing is starting to drag again on the quill. Time for another new clutch! This is very disappointing due to the way that I drive the car. Since I purchased this car is 100% flawless condition from an older lady that took immense care of it, I’ll be damned if I’m going to go out and beat it. I’ve never once did a burnout, and I always start out at about 1400 rpm’s. I don’t tach it up to 3,000 like some idiots do just to pull out. Why do you need the engine making all of its power just to pull out? Anyway, there is no reason that this clutch should be wore out already.

The warrantee expired in early August this year and approximately 1 month later, the clutch started going really bad. So I headed back up to Advance Auto Parts and told them this same story. I said that the only problem would be that the car gets put away for storage this winter and that I don't have time to work on it till summer. The manager who knows me due to the thousands that I've put down in the store, said that when I get the clutch out this coming summer, to bring it up to him and he'll give me a deep discount on the next clutch.

This is where my dilemma comes in. Should I go with another one of these clutches and take the risk of it being junk again, or should I go with a high price clutch, such as the High Revs from S.S.

What I'm looking for with this thread, is for people to reply back with brands of a clutch they installed in their cars and the good/bad, price, location on where to buy it, and the warrantee.

I know that Centerforce is a maker of some very good clutches and was wondering if anyone has used one of their dual friction clutches in a SHO and what were the results.

I've seen sellers on eBay selling SHO clutches with very weird looking friction disks, "looks like a jagged flower", etc.. Has anyone tried one of these?

It never fails that there is always a company out there that produces some of the best equipment but has not yet been "found". Their prices will be very fair, the materials used are top quality, etc.. I'm looking to see if anyone knows of one of these companies that make some really great SHO clutches at a fair price.

Please reply with any thoughts at all. Everything is greatly appreciated!!!

Centerforce clutches for SHOs are junk. At least that's the word on the street. You should talk to Josh at shonutperformance.com and explain your dilemma. He sells a few good clutches and he knows a lot more about SHO clutches than just about anybody. I know you might feel bad if you talk to him and don't buy a new clutch from him. Really, I can't help you there but I think I've heard he is fine to talk to even if you don't end up buying from him...maybe I'm a little off there but the fact that you have a sort of warranted clutch and could get a huge deep discount should offset things. Either way you might consider buying his upgraded ceramic throwout bearing and using it instead of the bearing that comes with a new clutch kit. If you do that then you can feel good about whatever choice you make, as long as it's an informed choice. Everybody loves those throwout bearings and says they are well worth the price.

Also listen to drivinhard's opinion here. Or maybe send him a PM. He is another one of the guys with an awful lot of experience with different SHO clutches. I'm still on the same clutch my car has had since 8x,000 miles. Not much experience here in the clutch department.

Also some people here have put in perfectly good clutches and have had them behave badly then they blame the clutch when really it was the installation that was at fault. Another thing to keep in mind when the opinions start to flood in.

Well i wanted to uses the ceramic tob. Sbc doesnt sell a ceramic one. Josh at shonut said he didnt know if the ceramic would work wit the southbend. Check out dxdracingclutches.com. Also, shoshop.com has clutch kits as well as spmotorsports.com, they carry spec clutches.

i just finished up my second clutch job on the SHO last night. i used the southbend dxd series clutch, the sho shop 8 lb flywheel, and sho nuts ceramic TOB. it hasnt hit above 3500 RPMS due to breaking it in, but it engages real nice, drives real smooth, accelerates smoothly, and shifts like a dream. id reccommend all of those to you.

good luck thumb

yes sir it is the dual friction kevlar clutch. ive put 200 miles on the clutch so far and i love it. its not a very hard pedal feel, and has a pretty smooth engagement. the clutch with the 8 lb flywheel isnt too much of a pain in the ass to drive, i dont find it too hard at all. thats just my .02 though.

No it's not too much of a pain to drive a SHO with a 8-lb. flywheel, but it's a big difference to get used to. I've heard good things about the Southbend clutches too. Not to mention that Josh T. at shonutperformance.com has an excellent clutch available which I'm currently running. The 9 puck fibertuff clutch is amazing, but I've yet to run it with the N20. So we'll see how it holds up. Looks like tomorrow I'll be tearing down the tranny again for another rebuild, due to a faulty (what I hope) TOB. I'll try to grab as many pics as i can with my new camera for anyone viewing pleasure. Good luck selecting a new clutch and I'd stay FAR away from the local auto parts store! :)

Has anybody else tried the dxd series clutch? I've been looking for a new clutch to put on the 95 that will hold up a little better than the stock one. You guys have any better suggestions?
