I'd like to start a thread on V6 MTX SHO clutches. Last year I purchased my first SHO. A 1993 MTX with 92,000 on the original clutch!! I purchased this vehicle from an older lady in my home town. She had no clue what she had and sold it to me for only $3,500!! Anyway, here is the real discussion.
When I purchased this vehicle it came with all service records and the lady stated that it was never in the shop for a clutch. The clutch was in working condition but the throwout bearing was on its last leg. She said that the dealership told her that it was time for a new clutch but she decided that she would rather sell the car and buy a new vehicle. She did own this SHO for about 10 years.
After I bought the car, the following week I started tearing it down to install a new clutch. I looked around S.S. and heard about their High Revs. Jr. Clutch for about $600. I decided to keep looking around before digging in that deep to the pocket book. I ended up at my local Advance Auto Parts store because I have a card that is good for 10% off all purchases. The clutch was made by the company "Zoom". The price was about $250 give or take $25 or so. It has been about 1 yr. & 6 months since I purchased it. The clutch came with a 1 year warrantee.
I had the stock flywheel machined at a reputable local machine shop before I installed the new clutch. It came with a sleeved throw-out bearing but from what I’ve since heard, it did not have a sleeve that covered the quill on the input shaft of the tranny. At the time, I did not know that there was some clutches that came with this sleeve to protect the quill from further wear. After I put the car back together, I took it out for a test drive. The clutch felt much better but I was very disappointed at how far up the clutch pedal was before the clutch started to engage. The auto tensioner was properly working and I also installed a brand new clutch cable. I’ve lived with the way this clutch is for a little over a year now. Recently the clutch is only grabbing at the very end of the pedal. The clutch pedal is starting to get gritty feeling so I know that the throw-out bearing is starting to drag again on the quill. Time for another new clutch! This is very disappointing due to the way that I drive the car. Since I purchased this car is 100% flawless condition from an older lady that took immense care of it, I’ll be damned if I’m going to go out and beat it. I’ve never once did a burnout, and I always start out at about 1400 rpm’s. I don’t tach it up to 3,000 like some idiots do just to pull out. Why do you need the engine making all of its power just to pull out? Anyway, there is no reason that this clutch should be wore out already.
The warrantee expired in early August this year and approximately 1 month later, the clutch started going really bad. So I headed back up to Advance Auto Parts and told them this same story. I said that the only problem would be that the car gets put away for storage this winter and that I don't have time to work on it till summer. The manager who knows me due to the thousands that I've put down in the store, said that when I get the clutch out this coming summer, to bring it up to him and he'll give me a deep discount on the next clutch.
This is where my dilemma comes in. Should I go with another one of these clutches and take the risk of it being junk again, or should I go with a high price clutch, such as the High Revs from S.S.
What I'm looking for with this thread, is for people to reply back with brands of a clutch they installed in their cars and the good/bad, price, location on where to buy it, and the warrantee.
I know that Centerforce is a maker of some very good clutches and was wondering if anyone has used one of their dual friction clutches in a SHO and what were the results.
I've seen sellers on eBay selling SHO clutches with very weird looking friction disks, "looks like a jagged flower", etc.. Has anyone tried one of these?
It never fails that there is always a company out there that produces some of the best equipment but has not yet been "found". Their prices will be very fair, the materials used are top quality, etc.. I'm looking to see if anyone knows of one of these companies that make some really great SHO clutches at a fair price.
Please reply with any thoughts at all. Everything is greatly appreciated!!!
