I now have my extra 3.0 sho motor with 86k sitting on a palette in my garage. It's sitting upright on the oil pan, and I don't think it's very sturdy. I'm hesitant to begin working on the motor because I suspect I'll knock it over into my dad's harley or something else dumb when trying to unbolt something.

I'm looking for advice on what kind of engine stand I should get. I found one sold by mile-x equipment that looks decent for $109. Here's a link to the stand. Having a stand that bolts to the crank so I can rotate it sounds like a good idea to me. Is this a good stand or is there something better I should buy? Price is very important, but at the same time I don't want junk that compromises my safety and future wellbeing.

I don't anything about engine stands so I'm in no position to give advice. All I know is I will probably pick up a cheap engine stand at Harbor Freight or just get one bundled with an engine hoist and load leveler. I don't plan on spending more than $50 for an engine stand.

you DO NOT rotate an engine on its crankshaft..... the engine stand bolts to the block and the STAND rotates......

you should be able to pick up a stand for around $50 .... i'd suggest at least 1000lb load capacity though

Autozone has cheapies. a 750lb stand is adequate for the SHO V6, but if you can afford a 1k lb unit, do it. Anything you buy for less than say $500 is going to have fairly lousy action at the swivel, but since this is a single-project-intended use, it'll be fine. If you were doing this professionally daily, you'd get one with a few extra features.

Also visit summitracing.com; they have a few half-decent ones, with fluid drip pans to match, and engine dust bags that are big enough to cover the engine. You'll spend about $110-$125 for the 3 things I mentioned at Summit, IIRC.

You'll also want to get the bolts for the stand to block; they're metric for 2, and 2 pass-throughs for the other 2 (so they CAN be metric bolt & nut for those 2 but don't have to be).

Hayden,
When I bought mine I got it at Harbor Freight for $50. Compare there and Northern Tool if you have one nearby. Get 1klb if possible and one with 4 casters instead of 3 if you plan on moving it around any.

Yeah, I know I'm digging in the crates...

But I just bought an engine stand, NIB, for $40. Found it on craigslist. Craigslist is almost like the text version of eBay, but cooler. :)
