Need a few pointers...PLEASE

alright, I pulled the oil pan down to check how bad my situation is. do i have to take bearing out to see any damage or will there be any thats obvious.
Im letting the oil drip tonight and i will be looking further tommorrow. I will get the bearings from napa in a couple of days to finish the job, hopefully the crankshaft isnt as bad as i think it might be! should there be any play in the connecting rod or should it be a tight fit, cause some seem looser than the others. Does the bracket that seems to be in the way of the connecting rods need to be removed or do i have to work around it?

Also how hard is it to change or check the valves or shims? the search just brings up a whole buch of stuff that really doesnt apply to what i want to know...i think thats all for now...thanks guys

If you have connecting rod bearing problems, you should worry about them before you think about the valve train. If the crank is damaged, there isn't much point in bothering with the upper end. Try this topic post for a procedure and another site for reference on the rod bearing service.

valves and shims are extremely easy to do. i recommend the video josh at shonut has. good luck with the crankshaft.

 

[Off Road SHO]

There shouldn't be any play in the rods on the crank in the front-to-back axis(radiator to firewall). It's normal for there to be "sliding on the crank" play when you move the rod from left to right (left fender to right fender).

You will have to take off the windage tray ( made of thin steel) and the main bearing brace ( made of cast iron and bolted to the bottom of the main bearing caps). Take your time. Good luck.
