Hi. I'm new to the website. i just bought a 1993 black taurus sho. the guy i bought it from told me the transmission was acting funny. It's not real bad but i'm hoping the trans isn't gone. it has 120k miles. I was wondering if any of ya'll might know what the problem is and how much it might cost to get it fixed. and if my trans is toast if ya'll know anyone that will sell me a new one. Appreciate the help.

well whats it actually doing though? is it slipping gears, is it hesitant in shifting? the 93 trannys were the worst of all the ones made.

with 120,000 miles on the clock, i hate to say it but your tranny is most likely toast. the SHO automatics dont last long at all. 120k is amazing. sometimes a problem can be solved by changing the fluid or a sensor. other times it takes a total rebuild which can be costly if youre not careful. send us some more info and we will see what we can do.

you can have your tranny rebuilt virtually anywhere, but if you do a search here on the forum youll see that the doug lewis tranny is the best bet (although a bit costly).

and by the way, welcome to the forum!

Tampa huh? I'm over in Pensacola, not too far from you. Sounds like a bad tranny, I would get it rebuilt unless you can get one used that's in great shape.

you may want to get the fluid changed. it should cost between $85-100 depending on where you go. i know the local valvoline here has the machine to do it but i dont know about where you guys live. (and im talking all 12 quarts in the tranny). i know my friends explorer was slipping like mad but he changed the fluid and it held out through the winter and most of spring before it needed a rebuild. good luck.

and do more than just change the fluid. have the tranny flushed. many times that will solve the problem you have. if it doesnt then its rebuild time. also before you do anything check the condition of the fluid. if it is burnt then it is also rebuild time and dont even bother with the flush.

rbohm, i need to get my tranny flushed too. im suspecting a blockage is causing the car to shimmy a little when i try to maintain speed going uphill. where did you have yours done? at a dealer? how much did you pay, if you dont mind me asking?
