I went to start my car today after it bogged down and stalled in the snow and a problem developed. The car is cranking even though the ignition will be turned off and the key out of the car. I had to disconnect the battery. If I go to connect the battery cable sparks fly out at first until the connection is snug and it continues cranking. There was even a little lighter sized flame at one point. Is this a bad ignition? No matter how much it cranks it does not start. Also, there is no noticeable difference when turning the ignition.

Either the starter solenoid is stuck or the ignition switch is. More than likely the solenoid. With the battery disconnected tap the starter.

I was thinking about tapping the starter but with several inches of snow on my dirt driveway and single digit temps I don't see that happening. I could switch the good solenoid off of my black SHO to test it though.

On my 91 it is on the fender.
UPDATE: I swapped the solenoid from my black SHO to the plus and it now works perfectly. Thanks for the help and quick reply!

Yep, your starter relay (not a solenoid) was shorting closed. They're only a couple bucks at AutoZone.
