I have a 1997 aho and sometimes it wont crank unless I keep my foot on the gas. Then when I go to put it in D or R it goes dead. So, I have have to keep my foot on the gas until I open it up on the hiway then it will be ok. I put a new fuel filter on, used fuel injector cleaner and it is still doing it. I cant understand why it does it sometimes and then sometimes it dont! It is the same temp outside, ect.

Anywhere have any clues to what could be wrong here??

Thnks all!

Theresa,

Depressing the gas pedal *should not* have any affect on cranking the engine.

As a matter of reference, your owner's manual will specifically tell you not to push on the gas while starting.

Please be specific, is it a failure to crank (starter/batter, etc) or a failure to fire when the engine does crank over.

I dont push the gas pedal when I crank until it continues to die on me then while cranking I put my foot on the gas and have to keep it there in order to keep it running. When taking foot off gas it dies. It is like it isnt idling. When I get up to 4 rpm it sputters. I have to keep my foot on the gas when putting it into drive or reverse and when I stop it goes dead..

After it gets warmed up it is okay. But, it doesnt do this everytime. Some days it cranks with no problems.

How many miles does it have? Could be that the IAB is malfunctioning. Did the check engine light ever illuminate?

No engine lights come on and it has 83700 miles on it. It runs smooth after it gets warm. I have had this car for about a year and it runs and drives great.

This problem just started a few weeks ago. Someone told me that it might be an air throttle bypass or something like that.I forgot what they called it.

the part they told you is the IAB, or Idle Air Bypass valve. Now that could possibly be the problem, as it would cause you to have to open up the throttle to start the car, and would stall at idle. The stutter you get at 4000RPM should be the rev limiter. That will engage anytime you hit 4000RPM in park or drive. I'd visit www.fordpartsnetwork.com and ask Torrie for a quote on an IAB valve. If you pop the hood, look at the air filter on the driver side, and then trace the hose left to the throttle body, you'll see right past it there's a valve attatched with 2 allen head screws to the top. It has a cylindrical part, and then tapers down. That's the valve, and 2 5mm allen screws plus the electrical connector are all that's holding it to the engine.
