I have a 92 sho with a blown 3ltr. I bought an 89 with hopes of using the motor in the 92. My question is can I use the 89 and if so is there a good place where I could get some step by step instruction on how to swap them.

you can use anywhere from an 89 to a 95.
In fact, go try to find a 3.2L from an ATX and drop it in, you'll thank yourself later.

People will argue both ways. I think it just depends on what kind of equipment you have available to you and what all you are going to replace.

If you want an opinion, if you drop the subframe/engine out of the car, (disconnecting everything obviously) the car is really easy to lift off and move out of the way... You can then swap the engines on the subframe, move the parts accross and then put the car back on top & bolt up, plug in and be done.
This is the way the FORD shops do it when they have to swap a motor... so given their penchant for finding the easy way to do a job, that is probably the easiest.. just my .02...
