I was on the highway 2 days ago and I was being my typical self by flyin onto the highway from 3rd (Love it). However I had problems with my temp. before this (for about 2 weeks). The car used to run cold all the time. which is good right? but then it started to act up(fluctuate from Hot to Normal). Someone on here told me it was some type of sensor and thats why my 89 was running hot. But again I'm a burnout  and have no $$$ to replace the part so I just drove it anyway.
It screwed up when I gunned it onto the highway. Just after that about a mile down I saw my temp to the red again. I turned my music down and I heard a clanking noise coming from the engine whenever I accelerated. I made it home but knew it was F#*ked. Later I went out to go cry on it when I noticed there was a puddle of something in front of my left front tire. there was no steaming of the engine when drivin, no lights on,but It did start to hesitate like a bitch when I was like a mile away from my house.
Is this a major problem? If so bye bye 89 SHO and hello 94 or 95. thank you and sorry soo long. Just a little ****** off to see my baby go.(maybe haha).

The temperature gauge is there for a reason. When it goes into the red, stop driving your car! Only then should you decide whether it's the gauge and/or senders that are messing up or if there's a real problem. Yeah, you probably hosed your SHO. It's an expensive lesson. Sorry dude.

the car went back to normal after a minute or so. but then it would go to hot again and so fourth.I know I should of pulled over but I just wanted to get home. I drove like 50 the whole way home. Could it just be somethin with the radiator? there was a liquid underneath it.

the fluctuation u were seeing was prolly due to the water runnning across the temp sensor speradically. When no water was present temp showed normal or cold...when the water actually ran across the temp sensor it showed its true temp. As to the other idiot light not lighting up. Well theres a good reason why they call them idiot lights.

Sorry to see ur SHO die

I'm sorry to hear about your expensive lesson, but all others who rear this post please heed the following warning:

When the temperature reaches the red, shut down fast or the engine is dead.

Aluminum headed engines do not tolerate being overheated. If you do it, you can expect to pay the rather high price. Please don't **** these engines due to lack of knowledge.

Well I'm plannin' on getting a 94. Its got 148,000 on it though. Oh yeah and SDpatt I know I should have shut down. Ive just had this problem for awhile and I was bein' an idiot.I guess thats why I'm a Framer and not a mechanic.
I want to get the 94 though. They want to sell it for 2,995 but I'll talk them down to 2,500. Is 2,500 too much for a Yamaha @ eek! 150,000 miles????Should I snatch up the 94 or should I keep the 89 and deal with the problem????

Does it still make noise? You might want to check the bottom of your oil drain pan next oil change for copper bits. Wipe out your drain pan first so it's not dirty on the bottom. Then when you're done pour the oil into your recycling containers from the pan. Since any copper bearing material will sink, when you've almost emptied the pan you should be able to see any copper bits left behind.

Even better would be to take your used oil filter at the next oil change and carefully cut it open. Don't cut yourself. This will be messy so spread out lots of newspaper (use rocks to hold down paper if there is a breeze). Take the paper filter element and spread it out and inspect for any obvious copper bits or other metals for that matter.

If you find a bunch of copper then you might consider replacing your rod bearings. Just need to drop the oil pan to do that.
