My apologies in advance for the long post. It's my first so bare with me...

Here is a list of current problems I am having with my 90 MTX ..

1. No low end power (boggs from 2000RPM until the secondaries open at 4000rpm)
2. Hard starts becoming more and more frequent. (Almost daily)
3. Recently developed a slight engine tick at idle coming from rear drivers side. (I took oil cap off to see if it got louder and it did not)
4. Possible bad motor mount (scars on top pass side of intake)
5. There's a grinding noise behind dash that sounds like a handheld egg beater turning but only when it's cold outside (30 degrees or less).
6. Hard shifting when in cold temperatures. (110k on original clutch).

Here is what I have done: (Current miles at 110K)

Top end maintenance at 95K (Valve adj, plugs, wires, plug well seals, gaskets)
Lower end maintenance at 105K (Water pump, timing belt, accessory belts, ect..)
New...TPS, ACT, Crank sensor, fuel filter, brake lines, proportioning valve, radiator, starter, exhaust, springs, control arms, halfshafts, struts & mounts.

I run the codes weekly and I am getting an 11 for both KOEO and KOER and cyl balance test code 9.

The only other thing I can think of that would cause the slip in power would be my clutch, but I am at my wits end here and ready to give up on the SHO.

Any help or suggestions would be immensely appreciated!!!

Thank you....

Welcome to the forum. You'll find plenty of help here!!

Issue 2 could be a bad fuel pump. I don't see where it's been replaced. Do you have a whine/rumbling coming from the tank? Try priming the system first by turning the key to on then off then back to start and see if that helps.

Issue 4 is most likely a motor mount. They are known to cause the 'buffing' scar on the intake by allowing the engine to rise and rub against the hoodpad.

Issue 5 sounds like a speedometer gear cable on it's way out. Does the sound vary with speed? Does the mph bounce while driving a constant speed?

I'll let the guru's answer the other issues! Don't give up!!!!

A few ideas:

1) Verify the secondaries are actually CLOSING when the engine starts. If they stay open, your syptom will occur.

2) Might be the cam sensor since you've already replaced the crank sensor. Might be fuel pressure related. A fuel pressure guage will tell you.

3) Sounds like rod bearings.

4) Check motor mounts using procedure at www.shotimes.com Your scratches indicates the m/m have indeed been bad at some point.

5) Behind what part of the dash? Might be the speedo cable or the speedo head.

6) Change your tranny fluid to one with good low temp characterisics.

Welcome to the forum, hope you stay.

Please avail yourself of the SEARCH function and with the FAQs site previously noted. Many questions have been covered and solutions have been found.

Good luck,

I would check to make sure that all of those rubber "pieces" that seal the intake parts together are tightened. Hard starting may be caused by the starter but I am unsure of how to test it. If the marks on your intake are vertical then you should buy some new reinforced motor mounts. If the marks are horizontal then it is your subframe bushings that are bad. Does the hard shifting get better after the car has been driven for a little while?

The fuel pump should be fine, I have no noises coming from the tank at all.

As far as the noise coming from behind the dash, I am almost positive its the speedometer cable on its way out. It doesn't bounce but when it gets cold out, the speedo reads about 10 to 15mph faster than I am going. Usually when I am in 5th gear doing about 75mph I am at about 3000rpm. When its cold out, at 3000rpm my speedo reads about 85-90mph.

I cleaned the MAF and that had no effect, and if it was the cam position sensor, wouldn't I get a code even though the check engine light may not come on?

Thanks for all your help, it is much appreciated.

Failing sensors don't always throw a code.
Battery charged and working properly?
I'm thinking along the same lines as Steve. Sounds like the secondaries could be stuck open (which will **** your power up to the high 3k's rpm).

Speedo or speedo cable.

Possible rod bearings worth checking at this age. As a matter of fact the cost of new bearings from NAPA is cheap enough ($40+)to just replace them anyway.

Motor mount-good guess there

clutch could be a little beat but maybe a tranny fluid change would help shifting a bit.

The noise behind your dash is the speedo cable. The hard starting is probably your crank position sensor. Give me some more detail on what exactly happens. The ticking at idle on the rear drivers side could be your throw out bearing in your clutch. Does the noise seem to go away when you push in the clutch? 110,000 miles on the original clutch is pretty good. Hard shifting could be partially the clutch and partially the fluid in the tranny.
