If they have 2" that would be a better fit. The pipes neck down to ~1 & 5/8" on both the inlet and exhaust tip OEM.

I just went to a single exhaust myself. Hard to find a good tip. The first time I had a stock pipe going back around the gas tank, then 3" out to one of my Bullet muffs. I thought they were 2.5" but they were 2.25" and the bucket heads uses a piece of 2" ID from the flex pipe to the rear pipe. :smash: I could tell this really limited the +6k rpm as it had a hard time getting to the WOT 3-4 shift point.

Tweaked the AF curve and got pretty good under 100 mph performance. But went back and had the 2" pipe replaced, I said I wanted 2.5" and came back to a 3" pipe. :smash: :smash: And they put on a Magnaflow 11229 3" in and out SS muffler.

I had a 90* SS 3" tip. It look like :hpoop: though so I took a cut off wheel to it and made 45* slant tip out of it. Really can't see it as it is a bit recessed from the outer edge of the bumper cover. Looks good seeing as with one prominent tip the SHO rear end just doesn't look right with the sculpted areas for the OEM tip.

But it is quite loud. :) And again had to go tweak the AF curve to compensate for the low end power drop off. What I ended up with is no third cat, 3" ss from the flex pipe to where the resonator was, stock 2.25 ID with the mandrel bends around the gas tank, then 3" ss over the control arms and to the 3" ss muffler and 3" ss tip.

I am considering buying these mufflers. Can someone tell me what else I need to buy besides the mufflers themselves? Many thanks.

It depends on what you want out of the exhaust.
Are you replacing the original mufflers because you have to, or want to?
Do you want the mufflers quiet or loud?
Would you be willing to lose a little low end torque and gain a little at higher RPM's?
My personal favorites (after hearing quite a few) are the Dynomax Race Magnum's.
There are two kinds though.
1. All aluminized
and
2. Chrome models
I recommend the aluminized ones, because they are half the price ($64 for this car, Jegs PN. 289-17516)
They start out mellow at the beginning, and get better as they "break in".
Quiet at cruising speeds up till about 75, then you can hear them over the road noise with the windows up.
When you drive with your foot in the engine, then you can hear them quite well. They are not, and probably never will be overbearing though.

There is truth to the "loss of low end torque" statement only to the point that tuning can fix that. Quite frankly tuning can fix the original programming which is not at all optimized.

No way would I use anything but stainless steel pipe and weld wire that won't rust out in 3 years.

What would you recommend for a progammable tuner for my 97 SHO?
I would like one that disables the speedlimiter, but I really have no idea what for. lol

Changing the mufflers on a Gen III SHO is one of the best things you can do - it will sound faster (even though it won't be). The sound alone is worth the effort.

As far as a tuner, don't expect much. I bought a "professionally" programmed X-cal and no matter what program I run (using, of course, the appropriate octane fuel) performance actually got a bit worse. I'm talking about 0- 60 mph using a g-tech pro to measure. I've never tested performance in the 1/4, but judging form the 0 - 60 results, I assume there would be no gains.

My recommendation would be save your tuner $$$ and buy a buffer (if you don't have one) and make that baby shine ... because these cars do look sweet when they're all shined up!

A lot depends on the tune. Some are generic some are specific. I can assure you a specific tune will net gains and open your eyes for the Gen 3 SHO.

This was a specific tune for a Gen III with my exact computer ... tuned by a so called "Ford Specialist". I think I'll try looking around to see if someone could reflash this thing - otherwise it goes on eBay!
