Finally got the SHO back together, tagged and have been driving it aournd a bit.

Is it normal for there to be a slight amount of whine with these transmissions while accelerating in 3rd and 4th. You can hear is pretty readily with the radio off and the windows up. It isn't terrible, but I am pretty new to these cars and I cannot afford for the trans to go out.

??

The shifter is pretty firm. There isn't much slop in it at all.

Have you checked your tranny fluid levels lately? I know you had your SHO sitting for quite a bit. It is possible that the fluid might have leaked out. Check the level or better yet, flush the old fluid out with new.

Does your shifter happen to move when you hit a bump?

Dont ask me how I know, but the sway bar can be installed upside-down, and it will come in contact with the rod shifter, transmitting a bunch of transmission whine into the cab. :swing:

The MTX transmission does have some whine. It is most evident in 3rd gear but can be heard in others if you have a good ear. All of the MTX SHO's I have owned had this to some extent and I never had a transmission failure. :)

Okay, that is pretty much what I figured.

Fluid level is fine. I just put a clutch in it,and had been driving it around. I had a pretty bad trans fluid leak form bad axle seals, so I took care of that on Friday. It was low on fluid before the axles seals were replaced, but not what I would call dangerously low. I just wanted to know if the faint whine gear whine is just another on of the SHO's many quirks.

I have no other issues other than a slight bit of paranoia about the noise, although faint, since I had never had a chance to really drive it in the 2 years that I have no w owned it. I just got it back on the road, and can't really afford for the trans to go out.

I do have aluminum SFBs and I made my own reinforced motor mounts. That could be part of the reason that I notice the whine.

In my experience, which for one I will say I am no expert...... but I have never, I repeat, never had any whine in my MTX, nor would I want any....

A "sho mechanic's ear" can hear what is called gear rollover. It is common.

How low would you guess?
