My 91 has 100K miles. The clutch petal feels great and it grabs pretty low. The thing is it is hard to get into first and is very notchy when shifting into second. DO i need new transmission fluid or is my TOB bad. My 89 with 78K more miles shifts better.

No, your clutch is fine if it is engaging low. And no, you cannot adjust it squint as the SHO clutch is self adjusting. Just take a peak under the dash at the clutch pedal assembly...

This problem sounds like syncros or blocking rings.

First thing I would do (and I did recently in response to similar problems) is change the trans fluid. Run a [SEARCH]. There have been MANY threads lately about trans fluid.

good luck thumbs_u

on my MTX, i had difficulty getting into first and some reverse grinding. i was told i needed a clutch, i needed synchros, i needed blocking rings. if my problemwas any of these, it wouldnt be intermitent. itd rather get worse. i just recently changed my tranny fluid to Quaker State 4x4 Symthetic ATF, and the trans is starting to smooth out. im pretty sure any synthetic ATF will work in time. many here vow by the GM Synchromesh fluid. at 15 dollas a quart. it betta be worth something.

Only if you get ripped off at the dealer! GM Parts Direct sells the stuff for $5.65 a quart - cheaper than most of the popular synthetics!

I looked it up under the following part number, which I got from another post in this forum:

The SHO's clutch cable is not self adjusting. Try pulling up on the clutch pedal with about 10 pounds of force. If you hear a click or two from the ratchet on the pedal menchanism, your cable just had some slack removed.

The symptom of having a difficult time shifting into first at a stop indicates that the clutch is not fully disengaging. This is a function of the the release (throwout) bearing and the pressure plate fingers. The clutch disc usually outlasts the release bearing and pressure plate springs. See the story and pictures of my clutch in this topic.
