I can move the input shaft in and out, but no other direction. So I think I can safely illiminate it being a cable shifter problem. So should I start looking for a new trans? How hard are they to remove and service? I rebuilt the 5-speed on the 280, but a turbo straight 6 is slightly easier to get the trans out. versus the side mount front wheel drive sho. Is there some easy fix that I am over looking before I got hog wild and start ripping mtxs out. Thanks

Where exactly are you located in MO? I saw your email addy as UMR. Rolla? There's a good SHO mechanic here in St. Louis ("projectsho89") that took apart my MTX to install the new blocking rings. The main issue with rebuilding one of these things is the lack of replacement parts? Seems most if not all of the items inside the trans is no longer made. Best bet would likely be getting a used trans ready to install. Might want to contact Bizzy here on the forum for any available "rebuilt" used transmissions. As for removal and replacement, it is quite an undertaking. I'm sure you can do it if you have access to a garage and plenty of tools. Let me know if you would like to borrow the SHONUT videos that document the process.

Let us know if you are in the St Louis area.

yeah I'm in college at UMR studying to be a Mechanical Engineer.

Problems are as followed: The SHO is behind my frat on jackstands, that is as good as it gets.
As any college kid is, I'm poor and would rather not have to ask my parents for more money.

The goods: I am smart and teach myself very well. Also seems like you guys know what your talking about.

Ah yes, the good ole poor days in college.....

This is THE place to get help regarding your SHO. What were the symptoms prior to putting the SHO up on jackstands? Was the tranny still working? Hard shifts? Need more info on what might be the problem. Regardless, it would probably be in your best interest to start tracking down a used tranny to use as a replacement. Depending on shipping costs, you might be able to get one for just a few hundred $. My offer on the clutch video from SHONUT still stands. Email or pm if you'd like for me to send you my copy.

The cheapest I have found so far is $250. I still have to track down a couple more leads.

I bought the car thinking it was just a simple cable shifter problem. The car was only 350 so it wasnt that big of deal. So I have never driven the car. Besides when we towed it. The engine does run quite well though. I am not afraid to start ripping into things though. I rebuilt the trans on my Z. Also I rebuilt and swapped motors in my Z.

the funny thing is that on 2 seperate occasions it shifted while up on the jackstands without problems, while I was working on the cable shifter stuff. And on both occasions I lowered the car and the trans would magically not work anymore. The PO said that it "would act like it was in 2 gears at once and would grind." So he just parked it, I bought it and went to town on the cable shifter thinking that was the problem

It's not a ventilated tranny is it? (diff pin blowout?) Is there any fluid in there? The check plug is on the front side. Take a 3/8" extension to remove.

Try contacting Bizzy to see if she has any input on the issue. She's been quite the MTX repair-woman as of late.

Best of luck. thumb
