MTX tranny fluid change intervals?

Well, Im still getting to know my newly aquired SHO thumbs_u

Im sure she's happy... so far she has been pampered Lots and lots of preventative mainantence! Shoot, I even gave her a bath yesterday (BBBRRRR! I froze! at 2 pm it was only 42 degrees!! )

Anyhow, I was wondering how often I should change the MTX trans fluid... shrug I know that many people say that most manual trans. dont need a fluid change, just a fluid level check every so often.

Also, I found some interesting (and very $$EXPENSIVE$$) reciepts in the pile of records that came with my car that show it had a complete transrebuild ( @ 65k). Is there a way to determine what kind of fluid they used? I worried about the reprocussions if I add an ATX fluid that doesnt work woth the fluid thats in there... eek! Or would there be any problems with mixing??

I can't recall what the interval is, but if you are worried about what fluid they used, I would just change it anyway. What will make it easier is to go to shotimes and get the instructions on how to put in a drain plug. This make changing the fluid a snap. Also I would suggest using 2 quarts of B&M TrickShift and 1 quart of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. This will make the shifts much smoother. IMHO, this is the way to go.

Officially, there is not requirement in the owner's manual to change the manual transaxle fluid. The fluid is specified to be either Type F or MERCON ATF and the box holds 6.2 pints (3.1 quarts). I just replaced my Type F with the MERCON III and 2 oz. of Ford Friction Modifier. I haven't noticed a change in the shift feel, but then, both fluids should be equivalent. I have used Redline D4 ATF before, but believe that the shift feel with the Type F or MERCON and the FFM is about the same and much cheaper. I use a manual vacuum pump and 1/4" nylon tube to remove a full 3.0 quarts from the box. As seldom as it needs to be replaced (60,000, 100,000 miles?), this method works just fine for me.

I have never used the fluids you have used so I can not comment on that. However, after Terry (twrsho) replaced his fluid with what I said above, the shifting was way smoother. It did not grind in reverse at all and I did not have to force it into first, or second on hard acceleration and hard shifting. That is why when I get my car back I will be changing to this. Just my $.02 worth.

took 15 min to do, just take your time
no rush.

Shouldn't you also change the transmission filter when you change the fluid? That would make more sense to me. And for you to change the filter you have to drop the pan.

We're talking about MTX, not ATX. MTXs don't have filters.

Well, I finally got around to checking the fluid level today...

The trans has definately had new fluid recently. That stuff was clean! The plug has even been replaced with a magnetic plug and there werent ANY shavings! The ATF looked good and smelled good, and was right at the level it should be at.

Protech/spmotorsports put BG synchroshift in my 95's tranny when they changed my clutch. The tranny is silky smoooooth, much better than before. The stuff is a little pricey though. I think it's around $12 a quart but I can't remember.
