ok here's the deal...i just got a trans that has a broken shifter boss. does anyone know if i can drill into the hole and tap some new threads in there instead of welding the piece back on? how deep can i or should i drill? it seems like it would be stronger if i didnt put the broken piece back on and just drilled deeper. will this change the shifting characteristics?

doh You still have the broken piece? I would be very wary about drilling deeper. I think a reweld and a reinforcing brace might be a good idea. I think it was olympic or twr that posted it. shrug

If you break the boss off pretty much the same length of the bolt threads (and no deeper) then there is enough room to mill it off flush, and drill, and re-tap.

I've done that on 2 tranny's I've broken the same way
