I know this seal has been discussed in the past, but I couldn't find a definitive answer. I replaced mine during a clutch job, and my reward is a good size leak. It was kind of difficult to get the seal seated because if you tap around the outside it just bends the dust boot ******. So I went to plan B and worked it in place by tapping around the perimeter using a drift punch at an angle to reach under that dust boot ******. That made it very hard to keep the seal level as it went in, and it was tough to get in anyway. It got crooked at one point, but I was able to straighten it out. Could it be the Timken 710274 seal is not a good choice? Could it have a compatibility problem with the Mobil 1 ATF? Maybe I just damaged it when it got crooked.

I'm going to order the Ford seal tomorrow and see if I have better luck with it. Should I have used anerobic sealer on the ******? The factory one didn't have any on it, so I didn't use it. Anybody have a better way to install this seal?

I don't use anerobic sealer on that one.
To install the seal with the least ammountof damage, use a 3/8 deep well socket.:p
