I found a junkyard SHO and I want to remove the transaxle. I've never even done a clutch job before, so I don't realy know the best method to remove the trans. The car is sitting on the subfame so dropping the subframe is not really an option. Also, I don't want to pull the engine if I can help it. Any suggestions on how to do this? It looks like the trans might come out the top If I remove the front head.

Thanks in advance! thumb

David is right. You're either going to have to support the engine and drop the subframe, or pull the engine and trans together. You won't get it out otherwise. Sorry.

And send the motor my way! thumb

Unfortunately the transmission slides off the crankshaft towards the driver's side fender. The subframe is in the way.

If you can't remove the subframe you'd have to pull the engine out to be able to remove the tranny. And really, it's not that heavy, (less than 500 lbs. for tranny and engine?) but you'd need a lift. The biggest part of the process is you'd have to disconnect the stupid maze of cables that gives us the wonderful fuel injection, a/c, computer control, etc...

unfortunately, junkyard dogs prefer the quick "hank and cut" method of removing wiring harnesses. thats the only thing i dislike about someyards. if you find a car where every connector has been unplugged, it must have been a new guy.

Thanks for the replies. thumb
The SHO is at a self serv yard and I think they do have a couple of cranes available, but I was hoping I could just yank the trans and heads and be gone. I really don't have any more room to store the whole engine. The car had an engine fire on the back side of the motor, so I think the harness is toast anyway. If I decide to pull the engine I think I will just start cutting. If anyone in the Seattle area needs a good bottom end, let me know and I'll show you where it's at.

i found a SHO at a pull-it-yourself place last week :D complete 90 model. i yanked engine/trans out the top in an hour. Didnt even cut the engine harness. It was already missing alternator, a/c compressor, and radiator though so there was a good bit of room to move around. they just brought a forklift over and ripped it out :D This place puts the cars up a few feet off of the ground which made it much easier though...with the subframe on the ground it may be tricky with stuff like the shift linkage and exhaust but if the price is right theres always a way thumb
