MTX question

I have a gen 2 MTX and the gears feel sloppy. I don't drive the car much at all anymore but I jumped in it today and drove it into town and the gears feel really sloppy like far apart. Any Ideas? Im gonna get under it tomorrow and check all the linkage, fluid and what not but to be honest I hate to say it but if I gotta drop the sub frame out again I think I am gonna have to cry and sell it lol. By looking around on here its almost impossible to get parts for the MTX IV. I have had this car forever. In the last 2 years its had a full rebuild on the motor and ALLOT of other new parts and upgrades.

It's likely the shifter linkages are worn. SHO Source has all the parts to rebuild it and make it feel like new again.

Do all Gen 2's have the rod shifters, or did some of the earlier ones still have the cable shifter?

I don't know about the cable ones, but there are parts to rebuild the shift linkage on rod shifters avaliable through vendors such as Sho Source and ShoNutPerformance. You can replace the shifter boss bushing, rebuild the clevis where it attaches to the trans and replace the ball/socket at the bottom of the shifter. When you rebuild the clevis you can adjust the stiffness of the shifter by how tight you make the bolts. Also, if you replace the ball/socket on the shifter rod do not use any grease in it. I did this with mine and it made it sqeak like crazy. Took it back apart, cleaned out all the grease and the squeaking stopped.

If the trans shift okay, but just feels sloppy it usually is the shift linkage, not something internally in the trans.

Mid year in 91 is when the rod shifted became standard.
As said above, wear parts are available from sho source and sho nut performance.

Also check where the rod goes into the box. The factory has a press fit where the shift rod and bushing meet. I have seen several shifters have play in this area. I put a couple tack welds to prevent movement.

Where did you happen to weld it? I got under it and I found that the stabilizer bolt was loose. It broke off a couple years ago and I had it welded. I tightened it up and it got a little stiffer but still kinda sloppy. The knuckles going from the rod to the trans feel a little loose but looks like they are pressed in. Funny part is I had a like new hole rod shiftier that I sold about 6 months ago lol.

You need to remove the entire rod shifter from the car.
The part that I weld is inside the black box.

You wouldn't happen to have any pics of where would ya? Its pretty easy to drop it out.

is there suppose to be play in the bracket and rubber bushing where the black box mounts up under the car or is that what you are talking about?

IIRC there is some play there. What he is talking about is inside the black shifter box. You will need to remove the shifter and open up the black box. It is a simple procedure, and when you look inside the box you will see what he is talking about. It is pretty simple.

I'm looking at some trans work in my very near future (clutch slipping) and a pic of the part would be very beneficial. I'm a visual person as well as a bit ocd about knowing exactly where. I'm sure it may change once I see it, but after reading this thread, think I'll order the shift rod stuff from either sho source or shonut. Hope there is a kit otherwise I'll have to find a list!
