Hey guys, new SHO owner here. Just picked up a 93 and I am trying to sort out all the problems.

I think I might want to just go ahead and swap the trans, but tell me what you think. First thing I noticed, it doesnt like to go in 1st. No grinding but if I dont make sure it is engaged all the way, it pops out as soon as I let off the clutch. So now its in 1st and will shift into 2nd fine. Going into 3rd and forth, it grinds no mater what. I found if I ease it in very slowly, it minimises the grinding. Going into 5th is fine.

Im thinking complete rebuild would be needed as it sound like the sycros are not working in 3rh and 4th. Anyone know about what a rebuild would cost?

Another option is there is a MTX on ebay right now that supposedly is in good shape I could pick up cheap, and its very close to me.

Your thought would be appreciated.

Yup sounds like syncros, I dont think an MTX rebuil will be too costly... although I have no idea what it would cost.

It's a good idea to have a spare trans.

Even if you can get yours working with a fluid change(certainly try), a spare trans may come in handy...miles down the road.

The owner of this forum(Bizzy) does affordable rebuilds and if the fluid change does not help, she is who you want to talk to.

Cool, thanks guys. I will try the fluid change first, and maybe pick up the other one anyhow.

What kind of fluid does this take. I know some ford manuals take ATF.

ATF fluid it is, there is a couple brands that are more suited for that tranny , the Royal purple ATF fluid is one of them.

If it doesn't already have one, install a transaxle drain plug. There are instructions out there, search.

The later MTX boxes had fiber lined blocker rings in the synchros, and they're sort of picky about fluid chemistry. Seriously, try some cheap-ass two-buck a quart organic ATF for a few hundred miles, just to flush out the internals, then swap to something nicer like GM Synchromesh, or the Royal Purple, but stay away from the really zooty synthetic juices, as they can be too slippery for the synchro friction surfaces.

Some folks have had very good results with Redline D4 ATF, and if you live in the Great White North, you'll appreciate it's cold weather viscosity characteristics.

If none of that works, the synchro hard parts may be worn out, or your clutch may be on the way out.

The only "zooty" synthetic that is almost universally liked is mobil1 ATF...If yer in to zooty...

only stepping on gary cause no one mentioned it...and I'm bored.

Thats a good idea. I was just going to buy some good stuff right away, but that way it gets a flush in a sense.

I dont know if it has the drain plug or not, but I already did some reading on here about it, so I should be ready.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I cant wait to get this thing hauling ass. Well once I change the CV axles too. At least one is shot.

If you need to rebuild, you may need to get a junkyard tranny since internal parts for the MTX are all obsolete and hard to find. Many people are hording transmission parts, I kept a rebuild kit for two years then I needed it to rebuild my transmission. I have the non-lined syncros and use Redline D4. I would also check your clutch. The throw out bearing may have worn the pressure plate fingers to the point that the clutch is not completely disengaging the engine from the transmission.

Is there an easy way to check the clutch to tell if it is disengaging all the way? The pedal starts grabbing about 1.5 to 2 inches off the floor. I have to change the CV axels, so maybe just go ahead and pull the trans and put a new clutch in. I really would like to have this on the road by next week, and pulling the trans and doing the clutch will take me more than a weekend I think.

Be aware that , there is a common problem that was'nt stated yet. Sometimes , the TOB passes through the pressure plate fingers. Might want to look into that.
