Not all transmission fluids respond the same way in every transmission. Things like wear will make results different. Just buy some regular Mercon and see how it works. I use Mercon V.

Most transmission specialists will advise using Mobil One ATF, or another good synthetic ATF. Even though it is for the manual transmission, for some reason, this fluid works best, and lasts longest. My transmission was rebuilt over 30,000 miles ago, and is still working perfectly.

I have been using Amsoil ATF with good results, last me around 20k
recentlly Amsoil makes a specific oil for transaxles now wich I have
just converted too, and it seems to work very well.

GM Syncromesh: 10.00 a quart. (a bit thicker, but folks swear by it)

You mean a LOT thicker! I used this and took it out the next day, just so I could go buy some different fluid. Using a fluid that thick is not going to help with lubing the stock differential, which already suffers, and can only help your shifting. We know what happens to stock differentials and lack of ****.....

I used redline in my 91 about 3 yrs ago and it only lasted about 8k before it was hard to get in 1st gear in the mornings, when I pulled it out it was burnt looking and smelled burnt I was suprised it only lasted a short time, I found a better lubricant but im afraid to post results

I've tried Redline MTL and Redline D4 and Mobil 1 ATF. Mobil 1 worked the best by far. I just put Mobil 1 back in but haven't finished the rest of the work yet to be able to drive it. The MTL was really bad. I thought I was going to break my shifter before it actually went into gear.

I believe you already did post your results on the "better fluid" you found.

Trans fluid is much like oil, whatever floats your boat and makes the trans shift how you like it.

Personally I use Mobil 1 ATF, though I've heard wonderful reports about Royal Purple, Redline and GM Synchromesh. I detest Synchromesh.

I can tell you what I had bad results with, that being Hot Shift or Trick Shift. Was good at first but after about 1000 miles or so it sucked, sucked, sucked. And this being on a freshly rebuilt/quaifed transmission with every part replaced with new.

I've run the Redline D4 and loved it, but since I replaced my clutch and TOB, she shifts like a pig! Just switched to Mer IV and she ain't liking it either. Better, but still not as smooth as when I first started using the Redline.

Can't seem to find the Mobil1 @ Advance or Auto Zone. Both said they can't even order it. Anyone ever find at @ WalMart??

Going to check Wally world tomorrow and local "mom & pop" stores. Hate to have to order it online, shipping $$ would be a *****.

older thread, but I should prolly ask anyway.
I replaced my fluid with Mercon1V a couple thousand miles ago and I was just wondering why the mtx doesn't use gear **** like many other trannys out there for instance my buddies eclipse gst...
the reason why I ask about this is because my cv joint snapped and we were pulling it out and when we oulled the other part of the axle out red fluid came out and he asked why its red and I told him I use ATF in the tranny and he said why. my response was " ugh ugh... thats what ford calls to use?"

Lots of manual trannys use ATF.

I dont know of any new cars or even trucks that use gear oil in the trans.

My f-150 uses ATF.
