So, one morning I start my car let it warm up..everything normal, put it in Drive, and it engages really rough, no auidible noise, just shook me. It usually just slides right in. So, driving to school, it was shifting normal but being more harsh than usual, not an audible noise just harsh..shaking me. So, this bothers me, I think maybe a motor mount? Checked my trans fuild..it was fine, and watched the engine through the hood engage in drive and it shook more than I think it should. So, I took it to my mechanic who watched the engine engage and had me rev it a little in gear (did this is drive and reverse) then he pulled on the front of the motor, and said their is too much play he thinks and that my front motor mount is likely the prob. So, I ordered a new one from Shonut, and he is gonna install next week. Is this a correct diagnosis, when it is replaced will it not slam into gear anymore and be back to normal. Thanx

I had the same problem in my 89. Every shift was knocking...not the tranny, but the engine itself. After a short period of time I had a small, shiney spot forming on my intake where it says SHO...found out it was my front motor mount gone bad.

Hope it fixes it!

Whether you knew this or not, but you just completed the test for checking for worn motor mounts in an ATX to a T. According to SHOTimes that is. If the motor lifted up in the front when you had the car in reverse, it is the front mount. If it was the rear of the motor lifting up when you had it in drive, it is most likely the rear mount.
