There was a post a while ago about checking your motor mounts. (Going forward and reverse with the hood up) When I went forward, I saw very little movement, when I went in reverse, I saw much more movement. Trying to guage it, I would estimate it moved 3/4 of an inch. Does that sound like a bad motor mount?

Your rear moved 3/4 of an inch? If so I would say no its not a bad mount. It could be that you applied for torque to the motor when you were in reverse.

the rear motor mount rarely ever goes. It's usually the front that goes most often. My brother's front mount is getting bad. We compared our cars by putting the cars in first gear with the parking break in and then reving it up and letting out the clutch. you could definately see a difference in how high his motor moved compared to mine. The engine will move slightly when doing these tests but it shouldn't move excessively. 3/4 inch in reverse is basically normal. do you see shiny spots on the intake? that is also a sign of bad motor mounts. the engine will lift and hit the pad which causes shiny spots. your rear motor mount is most likely fine.

The rear Ford mount has a reinforcing safety bolt to prevent large motions even when the rubber insulator fails. If you do the torque test in reverse and hear a solid "clunk," the rear mount needs to be replaced. Here is a shot of my worn out original rear motor mount that I just recently replaced. The insulator was completely separated and the bolt was the only thing keeping the engine from banging under the hood.

what do you all mean by shiny spots on intake...and why do bad motor mounts cause this condition.?

whfla1.......you will definately be able to tell a shiny spot on your intake. right near the DIS there will be shiny spots and at the front where it says SHO 24 valve DOHC, you'll see spots here. the color will be totally different than the regular color. It will look like the coating has worn off. This happens because the motor mounts become bad so the engine starts to lift under torquey conditions. It then rubs on the pad underneath the hood. This causes the shiny spots.
