Any witchdoctors or faithhealers out there that care take the curse off of my car. Boy this is driving me crazy. I still haven't found out what the chattering issue is from. It usually stays away if I don't rev over 3 grand. Then last week, it came around and it seemed louder than normal and it wouldn't go away. It finally did but it took a high rev in gear to make it go away. Kind of the opposite of the usual fix. All this is a little beside the current issue unfortunately. I was driving yesterday and it stalled out on me when I was downshifting. It acted like it ran out of gas. I have a brand new fuel pump as of about 2 months ago and it had better than a qarter tank of fuel. When I started it back up I had to keep my foot on the throttle to keep it alive. It wouldn't rev up like usual either. The revs climb really slowly. I got it home thinking it was siezing up or something. It makes kind of a whumping sound now as it runs but it doesn't miss. It would stay running by itself by the time I got it home, so I ran the codes and heres the list. KOEO was 87, fuel pump circuit fault. Memory was 41, system was lean for 15 seconds or more-87,intermittent in fuel primary circuit- 95,possible bad ground- 96,fuel pump relay or battery feed was open. So I am guessing that I have a bad wire somewhere! What worries me most is the noise it's making. Anybody have any ideas about that?

It sucks huh? If I would have known it was going to do this I wouldn't have spent so much on it, painting it and what not. Oh well. I was out poking around on it some more tonight, I couldn't find any bad wiring. I fired it up again and it seems to run better but it still makes that whumping sound. I opened the oil cap and the sound took on more of a metal clattering sound. I just did the rod bearings and I don't have an oil pressure light. What could I have messed up?

More of a metal clattering sound when you take the oil cap off? Sounds like it's at least time to do your valve lash if it hasn't been done. The cam lobes are probably slapping at the shims.

Well, the valve lash was done in January but that doesn't mean I am ruling out a problem in that area. How possible is it to have a shim come out? What else could go wrong in the valve train to cause this kind of problem? I also already replaced the tc tensioners. I noticed last night that the engine bay really stinks when it's running, almost like the cats are bad. I just replaced them but I put a set of used ones on that were doing just fine on another car. If the cats are plugged though, wouldn't the o2s show a rich condition?

Well, I changed out the radiator on my friends 92 today and I think I will be driving it for a while. I can't get any shop time so I will have to wait until I finish my garage before I can work on it. cry Oh well, I guess it's just more motivation to get it finished up. I would like to try and narrow things down before I work on it again though. With the chattering coming and going, wouldn't that rule out a rod bearing problem? What kind of noises can it make when it's running lean? tia.
