Owner's manual says Type F but thought I had read that Ford changed this to Mercon in later model SHOs. Will Mobile 1 be OK even though it's a Mercon replacement?

It will be fine. Sometimes you will have to try a few different fluids to see what your tranny likes.

Original tranny but with the upgraded Ford clutch. Does that matter?

Yes, it matters. The question was asked because 89 transmissions came with all brass blocking rings. By putting in a fluid that is more slippery, it will be more trouble for the blocking ring to stop the gear, causing for grindage and/or notchy shifting.

Most non rebuilt MTXs like standard Mercon III Dexron. Ive tried most of the expensive sythetics, even some B&M trick shift and nothing really compares to generic ATF (mer/dex III).
