a few weeks ago, my SHO Sable wagon developed a bad miss. it reported a 215 code, which is coil 1 failure. I replaced the coil with a good used one, and it ran fine for a while. now, it runs poorly again and again reports a 215 code.

did I just have bad luck with the 'new' coil pack, or is there something else that could be leading to the coil failure?

FWIW, on a Buick Grand National I had, I had the same issue. Replaced the coil pack with a known "good" coil pack.

Turns out the used "good" pack went bad as well.

Not sure if it's of much help, but totally not unheard of with those darn coil packs.

Ive heard coil packs rarely ever go out. Since yours did and still ran i figure give it a try. Im getting a bad miss, pooping sound under low rpms, then clears up.. new plugs and wires didnt help
