I had two misfires, yes that's right, TWO! back in August. Two coil packs were replaced, and now I am less than 2 months later I have another misfire. Only I'm pretty sure it's TWO again. On tuesday I noticed a slight vibration on the steering wheel and gas pedal. The engine warning light has been on since god knows when, so i reset the battery but every time it comes on it throws like 7 or 8 codes at me. On thursday I take it out to drive and it's totally *****, shaking like mad at 2-4k revs and has a very rough idle. I'm 99% positive it's another misfire and 50% positive that their are two. I would assume that it's the same ones, because I swear to god i will go ape if i find out I've had 4 coil packs go bad in 2 months (unless of course something else is causing the misfire)

In addition to the occasional blinking light from the SES, I also get a brake light come on whenever i accelerate between 5 and 20mph.

Just below 120k miles. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing TWO to go bad at the same time, and what might cause them to go bad again, or another two to go bad?

At 120k miles you should be ready to replace the four coils at the back those don't last more than 80k or 90k miles. after those miles you will be getting some misfires every now and then because the coils are failing; If I were you I'll replace the back coils and keep a close eye for the fronts. Look for cheap coils at murray's or autozone. just search and you'll find some links or maybe SHO123 may chime in and give you the information you need.

I got my coils at Autozone, which carries the Wells brand. Buy online, because the retail stores only stock one.

I've heard Murray's doesnt have the cheapest prices anymore, and that AZ did. Anyways like Wess said, just order them on line and put new ones in the back. My back bank will have three new ones now.

When I cleaned the intake noticed one was new in the back, another one up front was new so I put it back there, and I just won a new motorcraft coil off of ebay for less than 50. Plus it gives me a chance to see how dirty the intake has gotten in a year.

Misfires suck, bad.

just got the car back from mechanics, the SES light was on but he said it came up with no codes listed, and when he checked the history their was nothing on it. The car idles fine now, but the seconds you put it into gear it gets rough, at a very very slow acceleration it is fine, between 1-2k rpm but between 2-4k it's really rough. I can smell a strong gas smell when i get out of my car too, so it is 100% sure it's a misfire but we're not sure what is causing it.

In addition, whenever you first accelerate after letting the car coast for about 10 seconds or braking, the brake light comes up for about 5 seconds or until you let off the gas, but then if you let up and press it right back down immediiately, it doesnt come back on.

Guy i sent it to said he checked for vacuum leaks, didn't find any, and so he gave me the car back and said the second the SES light comes back on bring it back.

anyone have any ideas?

Do like Nimz said and unplug a couple coil packs. Drive around or at least get it to run for a while and it might toss a code for every misfire that the computer is seeing.

My car had a misfire at idle but smoothed out. I fixed that by rompin on the car entire the coil failed completely and made me drive for an hour home with a rough engine. Got the code though.
