Just got my car back from a mechanic who was putting in new wires and spark plugs... The car was backfiring as I was driving home. I pulled over several times, and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Finally, when I got home, I realize the 5 and 6 cylinder wires had been crisscrossed, so both cylinders were misfiring! How much damage could this do to my engine? Should I be worried?

You have just been the victim of one of the easy goofs for folks that don't know the SHO. Or those that read the Chilton Service Manual. This is not unheard of. In fact, back at the 120,000 mile 60K on my engine, I did the same thing when I replaced my wires because I trusted the Chilton's manual. I had to call a Ford service department to confirm the error.

No lasting harm, your engine should be just fine.
