i took off my covers and noticed the timing belt rubbed all the way through, could this of ruined my cps and would that cause engine to just stop? what made it off centered? bad tensioner or idler?
it went off because whoever replaced the CPS last didn't put the big dished washer that goes between the timing sprocket and the lower timing belt back on.
That big, flared washer is actually the outboard timing belt guide and is critical to keeping the belt in proper line. Without the guide, the belt usually grinds its way through the timing covers. The inboard guide is always in place and is also the shutter vane portion of the timing sprocket.
Just a note: the guide goes on the crankshaft before the lower timing belt cover and the flare curves away from the belt as shown in the previous post.
