Mileage at 1st Clutch Job

Well, you couldn't be doing many (if any) 7K rpm shifts, driving it like an old lady.... ;-)

Ford even acknowledged in '90-'91 that those clutches didn't cut it.

If you didn't buy it new, I fully suspect it had the upgraded clutch. The stock 9.25 was VERY wimpy. The stamped PP was meant for a 4-6 cylinder econobox.

You can suspect all you want, it won't change anything. It was the small stamped, 9.25" clutch disk and cover...I still have it, attached to the 140k+ mile engine...in the corner of my garage.

The 9.25" clutch was plenty reliable...it was the average customer that never learned to work a clutch properly that caused so many premature failures.

Bluie went 102K on the OE clutch (purchased @40K), another 2K on the replacement cause the SHO Experienced Mechanic who did the job didn't bother to glue the sleeve in place, next replacement went to ~170K when James replaced it, @ 178K it liberated the pin!

Green 95 had to be replaced when I bought it @43K, ******, high engaging, centerforce stage 1 was replaced after ~30K more.

Give me one of them OE clutches and I'm a happy camper.

I don't own an MTX but I would have to say that it all depends on how you drive it.

It all depends on how you drive with the clutch. If you don't drive a lot of stop&go and are easy on the clutch, then it will last well over 100k miles. However, if you ride your clutch a lot and drive mainly in city conditions, it may only last 15-40k miles. The type and material nature of the clutch you use will also effect how long it will last. Ford uses 60k miles as an average figure for factory spec clutch life.

But, as I have posted for years, there's a LOT of SHO drivers who are puss(a)y drivers who never do 7K shifts and may as well own Vulcan 3.0s.

But they will never admit it.

Except when they say they get over 100K on a stock clutch.

It also depends on how well it was installed. I paid good money for a shop to install one that lasted 70K miles. The quill, TOB and pressure plate gave out. After seeing how it failed, the new clutch I installed has been in for 150K and is still smooth. One important lesson: keep the clutch cable tensioned.

Yeah, I believe it was in '91. In early '91 when my '89 clutch died (literally), I still got a 9.25" replacement. I believe the TSB/recall/whatever it was called came out soon thereafter.

Actually a lot of the Gen 1 cars were former musclecar guys. Guys who bought it for the same reason that I did. Pretty hard-driving group. Now, when you get to the '93-up ATX crowd.......

My 89 has over 200K, and is on its second clutch. I am the third owner, and the first owner had the small clutch replaced during the recall. I never asked how long the original small clutch lasted, but I am guessing quite a while.

Did you buy the car new? Sure it was the original 9.25" and not the upgraded 9.75"??

I bought the car in 1990 with les than 20k on it and knew the person I bought it from; nothing was done to the car at all; it still had the small flywheel on it at 140k when the TOB gave out, so bought the larger one to replace it.

Clutch

I spoke to the original owner tonight who bought the 1990 SHO new and shortly after had Ford replace the clutch to the larger 9 3/4", he also said he has it repalced again but could not remember when. He own the car from 10/1990 to 02/2008
Good to know it has been replaced and upgraded as I have already bought the 9 3/4" valeo clutch kit.
He also said he had it over 140 MPH
