Ive seen a couple of pictures of people using what looks like 2 pieces of box tube in the form of a cross to hold up the engine during a clutch job. Are there any plans around for one? I made a wood one once, but it got trashed and Id like to use metal for the second one.

I made mine out of double tall "Uni-Strut", a C-channel type of metal that has special locking nuts that can slide along the entire length and lock into place wherever you need it. I used uni-strut for the short side pieces also that rest on the lip of the fender, and just wrapped them in duct tape to protect the paint. They're not fancy nor pretty but very functional and strong. I'll get some pics up later today if you need it.

tom please post some pictures if you can, I was thinking of using the same thing for my support. just I was going to cut plates for the end and use the tool handle dip stuff on the ends for protection.

After looking at all the alternatives, I bought this one brand new from an ebay store, Arctic Tools, for under $75 delivered. I figured lumber/hardware/pipe to build any of the homemade ones would cost between $30 and $40, or more. My time is worth something, and that made the store bought one the obvious choice. It has significant advantages. It breaks down into a small box for storage when not in use. Being adjustable, it can be used on other cars. With its separate front and rear chains, the angle of the engine can be easily adjusted. It has some resale value.

It was rock solid for my clutch job; no creaking or anything like that. The front J hook aligns perfectly with the lifting ring. At the rear, attach a chain with a bolt into the usual unused hole in the cylinder head next to the water pipe bracket. But don't route the chain straight up the back. route it around the end of the cylinder head with a bunch of rags to pad it, and it will line up perfectly with the rear J hook. I added safety chains in case a J hook weld broke. I also put 2x4 blocks as safety backup for the fender supports, but now that I 've used it I would not bother doing that again.

My sole criticism of this unit is the rear J hook bracket's lateral location is fixed. It works out fine as is for the SHO, but to make it perfect I would mount that little pipe bracket on a square collar that would slide over the tube so it would be adjustable

I am very happy with this unit, and I highly recommend it.

In the post above my first post in this thread, Josh posted a link to a thread that has pics of my support as posted by SHOAZ when he used it.
