Well today me and my friend were messin around on the street. So i was goin about 90 and went to go shift into 4th but accidentally put it into second. Now my car vibrates at idle alot as if it had a big block under the hood and it is kinda hard in the shifting department. It also makes a noise when trying to put it into 1st faint but i can hear it.Please can someone help me out in diagnosing this problem.

Kinda curious as to how you put it into second..... not trying to rip on ya or anything but you have to go back and to the left to get it into second from third.....

It's likely that you bent or broke one or more of the torque straps in the pressure plate. That would be consistent with what happened and the low-rpm vibration.

So I agree that it's time for a clutch job.

If you did infact destroy a pressure plate, stop driving it NOW! The broken strap can start to cut into the tranny case itself. If this happens and it cuts throuth the "wet' part of the tranny your royally screwed. Trust me, I know. If you want to verify this before pulling the trans, you can remove the starter and look at the pressure plate.

ive never done that but ive always been a great standard driver and learned to drive in a older subaru.
but my one friend who never got the concept of manual was racing his 4 cly mustang and thought his 5 speed became a 6 speed not knowing it was rev and well i was in with him and lets say all the sounds and the being thrown to the dash part wasent pretty.. he blew 2 spark plugs into the hood and torn the rear end transmission and totally messed the engine up it wouldnt even start again even the mechanic said junk it..
i couldnt help but laugh at him but it was cuz he was a ******* fighting to get the car in rev at top of 5th thinking it was a 6 speed.
good luck and the others are right check it now before you rip the aluminum trans to shreads

I red line my stock Yamahammer regularly. If I was worried about doing that, then I'd have sold it a long time ago...

This is simply a case of missing a gear while shifting.

Surprised the synchros allowed that to happen...

I have no valuable input to give... just, surprised.

There's no lockout in those gears so it can happen quite easily. The only gear that there is a lockout of sorts on is 5th to reverse. In other words, you could go from 3rd to reverse while moving forward quite easily. I know of a few people who have done it too.

Back to the subject at hand though, sounds like a clutch job is in order. Do be careful about the straps. If they are indeed broken they can eat into the wet side of the trans as AREA 91 stated. I've seen a few transmissions that have been repaired after damages like that, but those repairs don't come cheap so you'd be better off to not drive it until it's fixed.

This will be an expensive "lesson learned." Another lesson from this class would be that if you have to use THAT much force on the shifter, you are going to wear (synchros) or damage (blocking rings) something.

Yep, that too. It also puts a LOT of stress on the boss.

I believe that, no problem.

But I am getting the impression that each one of these cars has its own quirks, and some are more forgiving than others. Mine seems to have very unforgiving synchros - that's where my initial disbelief came from...

If I'm trying to select a new gear, higher or lower, the lever will not drop into the shift gate despite all efforts to put it there, so long as the revs aren't matched.

Rather, if SHOracer86's situation happened to me: if I was in third close to redline, and let the revs drop to accomodate a shift into fourth, there's no way my car would let me move the shifter into second. I could tug at that thing as hard as I can and it'd be like the gear wasn't there. It won't let me in until I slow down and rev the **** out of the engine... then it just drops right in. The only way my car would allow the shifter to go into second from third at 90mph is if I revved to almost 9 grand, and that is impossible on my stocker.

Is my car displaying abnormal behavior, or do any other MTXers out there have such strictly regulated gear changes?

I did that same thing in my bro's 5.0 stang.. goin about 90 when I went to downshift into 4th but caught 2nd. The motor didn't want to jump to 8K so the tires lost traction and the car went sideways.

fun times.
