So, it appears my clutch just decided to crap out on my last night. I thought maybe it'd clear itself up today, but no dice.

The problem is, I can't get it into gear while the engine's running. The TOB's been notchy for a while, but I've delayed putting it off. So, am I right in assuming that it's the clutch? If the car's in gear and off, and I let off on the clutch pedal ... the car doesn't roll ... clutch in, it does.

Someone please tell me this isn't internal ... but if it is, how much will I be looking at for repairs ...?

SHO91MTX:
you probably broke a finger or something. Definitely sounds clutch related.
No idea how much I hope you're right. If this repair is too expensive, uh, anyone want a locked-in-single-gear 90 Taurus SHO? :)

I had a similar problem. No shifting what so ever when car moving. When clutch pedal is pressed in, tranny in gear, turn key whole car moves. Lifetime warranty on starter thumbs_u Thank God!! In the shop now getting the works, clutch, TOB, seals, and free syncromesh. Will be bending me over far enough to get about $700 boink boink boink boink boink but what can ya do when yur 17 w/ no tools shrug

Clint, if you didn't ride the clutch like a woman, you wouldn't be having these problems. :p

Just kidding buddy. Best of luck fixing it.

Your situation definitely sounds related to the throwout bearing and the pressure plate. The "notchiness" is the telltale sign that the interface between the two components is about to create difficulties decoupling the clutch. I just went through that same scenario and posted about it this series of topics: Clutch Time, Clutch Time 2, Clutch Time 3 and Engine Support Details.

Thanks, Scott - I'm almost sure (after today) that it's the TOB. It wouldn't go into any gear until I floored the car, then it would shift just fine. Prior to that, if I started the car, the car wanted to move as well (even w/the pedal in) ... but it's still going in for repairs. I just hope it isn't too much, cost is a huge factor here ...
