I recently got my hands on a 94 SHO. I did the exhaust system (Magnaflow y-pipe & Dynomax cat-back) Also did a cold air intake and removed silencer, O yeah and new ignition system (Accel Coil, Taylor 8.2 wires, A.L. PP plugs)... I've been looking for the next cheapest bolt on to gain a lil HP. According to my research a new MAF is next in line, But I've heard good and bad bout C&L, Pro-M, and other Ford MAFs. I've also seen SHOsource has a 75mm Mas Air. The car is my daily driver and I enjoy the driveability. What would be the best to buy just for a few horse and better throttle response w/o tuning or major drawbacks? :thankyou: ED

You could go with the drop in option SHOsource sells. I myself have considered one but I have decided that I do not have enough done to my car yet to warrant purchasing another MAF. The stock one works more than good enough for the minor mods you have done.

Stay away from C&L. They work for Mustangs, but not SHOs. Also, you're going to wish you stayed away from that Accel coil soon enough.

You don't... you just have to wing it. I picked up a Pro-flow (yeah, before they were Pro-M) 73MM MAF and it has "93 SHO ATX" etched right on the electronics.

the C&L 73mm MAF is hit and miss. Some people (yours truly included in that) have had steller results with em, while others....well, let's just say, not so good.

Personally, if I was on the market for another MAF, I'd look at the SHOSource 75mm MAF, as it's a drop in, plug-and-play thing. I will say this, however, your best bet after throwing a new MAF on your car is to get it tuned, regardless on whether or not it says it's "calibrated" for the SHO. Proper dyno tuning will certainly pull the most out of any mods you've got.

And FWIW, the cheapest bolt-on to gain a lil bit of performance is a lil bit of the giggle gas.....

You might consider getting a set of Big Bore Butterflies rather than a MAF......similiar cost, and a proven, predictable power gain.

Thanks guys. So "SuperHo" if I did buy that SHOsource MAF and take it to a dyno what would they do burn a chip?

Also are the bored butterflies an easy job to do for a Novice mechanic

I just bought a new C&L maf and I think it sucks......

now I can't say for certain because I was throwing a cam sensor code when I put i on........... but as soon as I put the MAF housing on it stutters right before the secondaries kick in and it just feels like its about 10-20hp less on the top end....... maybe the cam sensor comes into play.... but I'm installing a 3.2 right now and a new cam sensor... so we shall see... if it still runs like crap I'm going to put the stock one back on.....

the only advantage to the C&L maf... is it bolts upto the stock airbox and uses the stock maf sensor... so it sort of looks stock to the untrained eye.... I kind of like my stock under the hood look......

Like SuperHO said it really is a hit or a miss, I love my C&L. I have had it on for about 2 years now and it has never thrown a code, it idles very well and there is a noticable difference on the butt dyno and my exhaust note has a bit of a higher pitch as compared to the stock MAF. I guess I just got lucky with mines but you can always get one of those MAF optimizers and you can set different voltage settings for both idle and WOT. I have also had a pro flow 75mm and while it wasn't bad my a/f gauge read a bit rich sometimes and I just took it off and sold it. Good luck on your quest for power.

I use the 80mm MAF on my cai kit. Been on there going on the 4th year and no troubles. YOu can really hear it suck that air when you press on the gas pedal. lol almost sounds like the blow off vavle on a sc car. Like to think thats what it is lol.

Bah. MAF swap is overrated unless it is a restriction in the amount of air you need. Get a bigger MAF when you get a blower. Now save your loose change and go get a used dry nitrous kit.:naughty:

The stock MAF "IS" a restriction. Its size will cost you peak hp. If you just fart around town all day around 3,000rpm then the stocker is the MAF for you. If you are like the rest of use that take daily trips to 7,300rpm then the stocker "IS" not the MAF for you. It really doesn't matter about the fact it can flow 600CFM, or that the SHO engine only pulls half that CFM because of less then 100% full volumetric effciency. As engine speed increases vacuum will increase and the stocker will cause your plenum tanks to suffer.

Its simple really...

55mm MAF @ 3,000 rpm
80mm MAF @ 3,000 rpm

Same flow, however one of them is under less vacuum.

There is a difference.

Stay away from C&L. They work for Mustangs, but not SHOs. Also, you're going to wish you stayed away from that Accel coil soon enough.

I think that's jumping the gun a bit. To be fair, there have been very few reported failures of the Accel coil that I've observed on the forum. I've only read about 2 people (Mels and Racer X) who had problems with them. Many more have had zero issues with them.

The bottom line is that getting a MAF is just small piece of the puzzle. If you really want one, I would get something from Pro-M/Pro-Flow that won't require a chip.

However, if you're concentrating on getting more air into the engine, I'd consider big bore butterflies and extrude honed intake runners along with that MAF. You're at a crossroads now - should you start down the modification road that never ends or just be happy with what you have now? :)

There are wiser, more productive and cost effective ways to spend your money. However, I'm certainly no role model with my car.

The factory unit is a proven win, and 90% of people will be more than happy with it, especially when coupled to something like the Tweecer to really dial it in.

That said, I REALLY like my Lincoln 80mm MAF :thumb:

Coupled with TwEECer tuning, it really woke the engine up. No noticeable changes at low revs, but at high revs the engine just sings.

Modified to fit with the stock box too.
