What are the odds that the MAF goes bad in our cars?

One random day I started up my car and it started dying when coming to a stop or at a stop and stumbling dead. I replaced the TPS, no air leaks, no misfires.

When I unplugged the MAF and let it run and drove it around for a while, the idle was actually where it should be and it was running smooth.

So, does all this point to a bad MAF?

One of the most overlooked items in diagnosing rough or poor running is a dirty MAF sensor.

MAF sensors can often fail due to excessive heat or a breach in the electronic pack that allows moisture to contaminate the electronics.

If cleaning the MAF filaments with a non-residue electrical contact cleaner (or over-priced MAF sensor cleaner from the auto parts store) doesn't alleviate your problems, then you may want to try a different sensor. It can also help to disconnect the battery for a minute after cleaning/replacing the MAF to clear the keep-alive memory in the PCM to reset the adaptive tables.

sounds like its going out. unplugging it while the car is running makes the car idle really bad

maybe

Difficult to tell if MAF is going a little bit bad. PCM will compensate for failing sensor by using preset values to keep the care running. When it really fails, you should notice poor fuel mileage & poor performance.

could also be:

open EGR valve @ idle

IAC malfunction (after fix, must clear keep alive RAM, idle engine 15 minutes, drive, to allow PCM to reset)
