I honestly hope to do this sometime. the small vents that the M3 and Z roadsters have look sweet and could serve a purpose for CAI systems. My plan is to gank one from a junk yard Bimmer and graft it into place near the hole in the fender that hits the airbox. I will most likely keep the stock airbox cause its already in a great position. but run a tube from the m3 vent to the hole in the fender. this could be just as simple as cutting a whole to fit the vent into, I dont know if the piece is molded into the fender or a snap in on the BMWs. does anyone know?
I have seen it on a lot of VWs and Hondas and think it would look trick and help pull some cold air. let me know what you all think! :)

I see these all the time on a SM Honda that comes to the autocrosses. I think they look terrible, but just IMO (you asked).

I doubt that you will create the right pressure zone to push in air from outside. Besides, the factory airbox is a CAI setup as it is, so there's really no performance increase to be had.

I like SIREDZO's idea of the vents in the hood like the Z-34. They are functional vents that lower the engine bay temperature. Being a big DOHC motor in a small engine bay like the SHO, there wasn't much room to flow air around for cooling. That might be something interesting to look into. But I agree with AutoXSHO in that for use with the CAI, the probabilities of it working to increase the air and pressure is very doubtful.

That was one of my ideas for my '89.... I'm not telling anymore, either :D

So, basically, you are going to be biting off of JT's car.
I actually got the idea from Kurt Eidelbach,i even used the exact same scoop.I did mention it,and he was VERY cool about it.

Granted,my scoop is able to flow much more air than those small vents, but it if functional. It was not meant to be a ram air scoop, but used for drawing cooler air, which it does.Fwiw, anyone concidering any type of scoop or vent, there is one major issue. In heavy rain,my scoop will draw water into the engine. So much in fact that it will "drown" the intake and stall out the car.I have a plate that i use to block off the opening in the rain now.Make sure you have some sort of provision for this.

The fender scoops IMHO look kinda fugly, at least the one I saw did. As for it being a good spot for CAI, I doubt it. I belive that air being pushed and accelerated around the side of the car causes a low pressure area. It is a good place to vent air away from the car. I think the same applies to the hood vents mentioned by siredzo. Given all the electrical gremlins that haunt shos, adding these vents to help get rid of hot air under the hood could be a very good idea. A snorkel down under the bumper where there is a high pressure area caused by air being squished under the car is a better CAI source, I believe.

I can see what you are trying to say,but it`s wrong.I have stated proof that it does draw cool air into the engine bay.I also have a guage that will be mounted in the cabia via a remote probe that will display the intake air temp so it can be documented.

I've thought of making ones that open at higher speeds or throttle, and goes to the air intake. It would look nice and serve a purpose.
