For broken studs, take the wheel and rotor off, get out the BFH, and get to hammerin!

To install, insert by hand, install rotor and wheel, and torque to spec. The final torquing will pull the stud flush with the hub. :thumb:

How did you break two lug studs?? Unless they were overtightened they should not break. If they broke going down the road I would definately check your wheel bearing.

They'll break from too loose more often than they'll break from too tight.

Studs break, it's not that unusual.

Or if some unexperienced young kid about two years ago is changing a flat tire and thinks the lug nut needs to be really tight and to do so puts his full body weight on the tire iron and it snaps...not that I know anyone that did that...its all in theory of course.... :oogle:

If you torque down on a hot stud (IE: track use) it can make it all that much easier to break.

ok i realize that this thread is like 2 years old but id didnt feel the need to start a new one for some simple questions, whats a BFH? and what does torque to spec mean? thanks in advance.

BFH = Big Fncking Hammer

Torque is the amount of force it takes to turn the nut. The spec for the wheels is 85 - 105 ft/lbs.

Yes, the caliper is removed from the bracket (ears on pre-94) by removing those bolts.

why do you have torx screws? On my calipers, I have 13mm bolts, on the brackets, I have 15mm bolts. You might have to use a combination of PB Blaster and heat (MAPP gas torch). This is, of course, on a Gen 2. If you have a Gen 1 that might be different...

Many of the older SHO's originally had torx. My '92 had torx on one side, but not the other.

when i first got the new clutch and tune up stuff (plugs wires etc) in my 91 tsi awd, took it out for a spin, was only going to go around the block. The car didnt build full boost prior to this and was now (thanks to the fresh spark). I proceeded to zip around for about 4 or 5 blocks, then i felt a little wobble, then a big wobble. Pulled over, got out, my wheel was angled in and 3 out of 5 lugs were snapped due to practically hand tightening the lugs. :rofl: You live and learn right? IT seems i always learn the hard way...
