I have 298,000 miles on my '89. As far as I know, no seals or gaskets have been replaced on the lower part of the engine (oil pan, crankshaft, transmission, half shafts, etc.), except whatever is replaced when a clutch job is done.

I've got tranny fluid all over the place (on the transaxles shafts), from the input shift shaft seal (say that fast five times!! :evil_gri: ) and oil on the crank shaft, etc.

I go through about 3-4 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles.

Last time I checked the tranny fluid, I was down 2 quarts
I don't know over what time period that was.

I bought a gasket kit once when I replaced the upper engine gaskets and have to dig it out of storage. I think it is a complete gasket / seal kit for the engine because I remember it contained the oil pan gaskets, the "timing cover" gaskets, etc.

I have the half shaft gaskets (large circular metal / rubber gaskets) and I think I purchased them separately.

My questions are:

1.) Can someone provide a list of ALL the seals / gaskets that are replaceable on the lower half of the engine and the transmission / transaxle?

2. ) What seals / gaskets can I do myself without removing the transmission while lying under the car up on jacks and can start in the morning and finish before dark? This would at least allow me to stop some of the leaks.

3.) How do I make that stupid input shift shaft seal stay in the housing. It keeps popping out - even a new one. I even bought the special tool from the Rotunda catalog to install this seal.

How hard should you pound this thing in to make it stay? :madflame:

I don't have a garage, so if replacing seals / gaskets involves major work where I need an engine crane, removing the transmission, etc., I'd have to bring it to a shop (yuch, :jpshakeh: ) or to someone where I could pay him / her(?) and would allow me to watch and help out so I can learn to do the "big jobs" myself.

Thanks. :salute:
