I ordered an aftermarket condenser for my 89 and found it to be thinner; in addition, the OE brackets did not fit. It was a cheapy, so I ordered an OE Motorcraft YJ-422 correct part # condenser for an 89. It came in today, was also thinner; however, it had revised upper mounting brackets that fit, yay! The $50 extra I guess was worth it at this point. Then Ford has an instruction card inside regarding the removal/modification of part of the lower mounting brackets.

It's not extremely clear. Has anyone had to modify theirs for the thin condensers, and if so, what has to be done? Looks like some metal has to be removed, almost making a 90 degree angle for it. I don't want to go cutting on anything just yet.

I wound up installing it only with the new upper brackets. It sat into place OK. the angled brackets at the bottom dug into the fins slightly, but not enough to worry about since these things are almost impossible to install without bending any fins whatsoever. The top brackets worked great and this one included new rubber stops for the bottom, which did help in the fitment. The aftermarket one had lousy rubber bottom stops that caused issues. Got the Ford one in, lined up, and connected just fine with the new top brackets.

Advice though for anyone replacing these condensers. If you're going from a larger one to a smaller one, you'll need revised top brackets to make it work correctly. I think after 90 or 91, Ford went to the smaller one permanently. This will only be an issue if you have an early Gen I car with the original condenser still in it.

Thanks though!
