low coolant light

alright test drove a 96 with 111,000 on it.....Owned by a Mr. Ron Fleshman...Kirk himself sold him the car....It was a buy back from Ford Motor Credit with a Cam Failure...

1.Kirk Doucette put in a motor with 50,000 miles on it,
2.Installed new cams and welded them
3.Put in a rebuilt Jasper Transmission complete with warranty,
4.New Yokohama tires....among other things were done to the car
5.Did a 100k tuneup
6.and installed a new wiring harness...

Car is in great shape inside and out...one little scratch on the passenger side seat, and one little ding on the passengers side door....Runs great...took it out and noticed the Low Coolant light....i commented on it and he told me its a sensor....UH OH! I live in Pa....Ron lives in WV....they only need inspection...I need that damn emissions!!!! Now my question is....How Expensive is this stupid sensor and how much to get it put in....Do i need to run a diagnostic test on it? I didnt have a OBD II today when i drove it(When i get it next week I will because i purchased one off Ebay) so i cant tell you a code number....anyone know what sensor this is just by that information??

IMHO, the low coolant light should do nothing to the computer and how it controls the emissions... the low coolant light is a sensor in the reservoir.... correct me if I am wrong here, but it should not give you a "service engine soon" light, registering a DTC... Moreover, the sensor is fairly easy to replace... you just have to drain enough coolant from the system to drain the reservoir... disconnect the hoses and pull the reservoir.... flip it over and you're looking at the sensor... I am not sure how it comes out of the reservoir or if it does at all, but that is the sensor... Replace, reinstall, and refill... all done! Enjoy your new toy... I enjoy mine, now that I have an alt that charges...

Faulty low coolant sensors are a common problem. As mentioned above, it should have no bearing on passing emissions. If you're still concerned, you could just unplug the sensor and the light will go away until you decide to replace the sensor or the tank.

I believe the Duratec Gen3 Taurus uses the same coolant reservoir as the SHO, in case you need to replace the whole thing.

That is correct, and we actually recommend people replace the entire tank instead of just the sensor as the sensors are somewhat fragile, and can be easily broken when installing them. The new tanks come with the sensor pre-installed.

It only takes two fasteners removed to maneuver the tank so the sensor can be unplugged. Takes care of the problem permanently.

There's one thing you might want to think about. These tanks are another one of Ford bad idaes. The sensor is molded into the bottom of the overflow tank. Eventually the seam (because it's sonicall welded) comes apart with age and the temperature cycling. As long as the sensor is shot, why don't you order a new tank ( I got mine from www.fordpartsnetwork.com) and **** two birds with one stone. And... let me add that I have heard of at least one case of an engine failure that had something to do with the cooling system. If your overflow tank gets cracked and you loose too much fluid while limping it home, you might, repeat might, have an issue. Personally, I'd get a new tank fo $80 or whatever, and know when the overflow tank was low. That's good knowledge!!!! I'd take this pretty seriously. I'm sure Ron took really good care of the car. He seems to be a great guy. I'd say just do it, and you'll feel better about it. But that's me, victim of a $6K cam loss back in... 1999? ;-) Jim

yes i did! I got it home then turned around and brought it 300 miles to Athens Pa....on the way home broke down...car wouldnt start....Starter went in it....250 miles from home....got everything straightened out now and have it home thanks to Ron Fleshman and paying for my starter! Thanks bro! 380 bucks too! drove up today and picked it back up....

and i am from south west pennsylvania....something like about 40 miles south of Da Burgh!
