Hey guys. I was getting on the hwy today, and some guy didnt want to move over for me. I was already in 3rd, at about 60, so i gave it about 3/4 throttle. well, the shifter popped out of gear so i tried to put it back in and there was nothing. Same with 4th, you could feel it go in, but then nothing was there.

I had no choice but to drive it home about 15 miles in 1st 2nd and 5th. The trans is now whining pretty bad in 1st and 2nd. I do have a spare trans that i will put in, But, what happend???

My guess would be synchros.

The Mazda Protege I have does that in 5th.

Good thing you have another trans!

My father in law had his son working on his Mustang and he moved the fork ever so slightly and when he was driving it hard he missed a gear and blew his tranny. Not sure if it might have been the same thing but who knows it's a SHO. If you need a hand with the tranny replacement hit me up.

It would seem much more likely to me that the shifter fork for 3/4 broke.

OK I know that Joe has a 3.2 in his shed and another transmission, now I'm trying to convince him to do his 3.2 swap!!!

Is it making a whining noise? If so it broke the main shaft.

- James

So you can break a main shaft, lose 2 gears and everything stays together enough to still drive okay in the other 3, but with alot of noise? Woulda never thought so. Can't imagine it lasting very long?

I'm curious too. I lost 5th gear on the way home tonight. Had the cruise set at 70 and went onto a highway interchange and I start hearing the sound of flapping/rattling like something had been caught up on the bumper. It went away as I cancelled out the cruise and then as I got on the gas I could hear it up front again. I quickly determined that it was load dependent. After another minute or so the shifter popped out of 5th and as I put it back into 5th it would pop out shortly. I kept it in 4th and was good for some time but then everynow and then the rattle would return. I made it home fine fortunately didn't hit any traffic lights and didn't hear any noise in 2nd, 3rd, 4th. I came to a complete stop to turn into my complex and it was a ***** to shift into 1st. Parked and idling tried to get into all gears. 5th was tough and it would not get into reverse at all.

I have had a problem with harsh shuddering in reverse, especially up an incline since the 3.2 swap. I mean harsh like it felt like the engine was hitting the hood and/or firewall.

I don't see any fluid leaks but it does smell like burnt clutch underhood.

Transmission or clutch thoughts?

Holy old thread, but i guess i never did post an update. Im not really sure what everything is, but this is what was found when the trans was opened up. I didnt go through the trans myself, but i sold it for 75 bucks as it was to a guy that needed a diff and good case. He sent me the pic a few days later.

Took me a second to figure out what I was looking at.....then I started laughing. If it were me I would have that pic hanging on the wall of my garage.

All i can tell is a gear is sheared from the shaft, beyond that, you got me.
I don't spend much time here anymore, but someone sent me a link to this, so I'll comment, then log out and go back to what I was doing.

That's the 1 thru 4 output shaft, 1st is at the bottom, then 2nd (the reverse output straight cut gear is below the 2nd output gear), then 3rd and finally 4th on the top of the shaft. There looks to be a clean break between the 2nd and 3rd output gears, probably something metallurgical from manufacture, an inclusion perhaps.

The 3/4 portion of the shaft was completely isolated and couldn't transmit torque to the pinion and diff ring gear on the bottom of the shaft, so that's why you lost 3 and 4, but still had 1, 2, and 5th which is the output shaft at picture-right.

The four output gears free-spin on the shaft until a gear is selected and a synchro locks it to the shaft. The shaft is gun-drilled and cross-drilled to feed lubrication to the bearing areas of the 4 free-spinning gears. The spinning of the diff ring gear is used as a crude pump to force oil through **** funnels that feed the shaft gun-drills.
