Well this is the 3rd time I've lost my 4th gear while driving. I do get the gear back after a while but obviously something is wrong. It always happens when it is hot outside and I have the airconditioner running (increase load on the car I'm guessing). Does this mean my tranny is on the way out or is there something wrong with my tranny cooler? The tranny is the original in my 94 ATX and it has around 120,00 miles or so on it now. Any help would be great!

Thanks,

Brett

Maybe not your whole tranny just that gear is about to go, good thing you own an MTX and can just change the gear which goes. But for the labor costs and just while your at its best to change some wear and tear items in the tranny.

seems to me he is talking about his ATX.

I am far from an expert, but I have experience with the automatics in my 89 (AOD), and then my 96 Thunderbird (4r70w).

The OD is usually the only gear to go, since it's not a gear at all, but a band. I suggest changing the fluid. If that doesn't help, open up the transmission, clean the pullies and replace the belt.

Yea I have an ATX (unfortunetly). I will take her in tomorrow and have it looked at. Does it seem strange that I loose 4th for a while and then it comes back and works fine? I had the fluid changed about 6 months ago or so but I would like to change the filter, gasket, and replace the fluid with some redline in the near future. Maybe I'll have that done when I get them to look at the tranny.

Thanks for your help...any other suggestions?

Thanks everyone for the reply. I have a friend that I trust and I will take it to him and get him to check it out. I really hope my tranny is not going cause I just bought my first house and this really isn't in the budget right now. Oh well, that's life right.

Thanks again,

Brett

Do the procedure that is listed above in this section. either that will fix it at about .17 or the solenoid could be blown or the clutch and palet for that gear are out of spec.

Try the procedure, take it from me I been driving and working on these before most here had a license.

Rebuilding my ATX now
